All this can be done in a little over 30 minutes!
Before we jump into creating our website, let’s discuss some of the basics with step number 1.
Step 1: Which Website Platform to Use (The CMS)
If you are researching how to make a bidding website like eBay, the best way to start is by using a well established website platform. This is known as the “Content Management System” (or CMS).
Why do I need a Content Management System (CMS)?
We cover this is everyone of our website guide on Buildasitelike.com. When it comes to building a site, we always recommend you use a CMS. There’s a number of reasons for this.
Firstly, a sophisticated Content Management System will allow you to build your website without the need of knowing any code.
Furthermore, a CMS along with a well designed template will allow you to launch a website with tons of functionality, in no time at all.
Finally, the most widely used CMS online, a system called WordPress, is absolutely free.
Before we take a closer look at WordPress, let’s talk about what the CMS actually does.
So what does a Content Management System (CMS) do?
A content management system is the foundation of your website. Everything else is built on top.
The CMS allows you to create and manage the design, content and overall function of your site all from within an easy to use admin area.
It is not that disimilar to updating your Facebook profile. Once logged into Facebook you can very easily upload images, write posts and comments and leave links, all with a few clicks of a button.
A CMS is the system that allows you to do the same with your own website. Images, text and all other website content and function can be managed using a simple to use interface.
The entire design of the site can also be controlled using the CMS. In the case of WordPress it is just a case of installing an appropriate theme.
In the case of our auction website, we will install our CMS and then choose a theme that will give us all the function we need for people to sell items and for others to bid on them.
This will include login interfaces for users as well as reliable payment gateways and sufficient security. (And remember, our site will bne able to do all of this without you touching a single line of code).
In a nutshell, a good CMS allows a complete beginner to launch their own website with ease.
A Closer look at WordPress (What does it have to offer?)
WordPress is by far the most popular CMS on the planet. Here’s a few reasons why:
- The system is completely FREE to install and use.
- WordPress is designed for beginners to feel comfortable straight away (yet experienced users love it too)
- There is almost an endless supply of themes that will control how your site looks (we are talking hundreds of thousands).
- WordPress plugins allow you to increase the functionality of your website as it grows.
- It is easy very to customize
- WordPress and most themes are responsive in design; i.e they will look great on any screen size.
- WordPress is fast and secure and is constantly being updated
For this tutorial we will be showing you how to create a website like Ebay using WordPress.
To do that, the guide will now cover the following:
- How to get started with the best Web Hosting for WordPress
- How to register a Domain Name
- How to Install WordPress onto your hosting
- How to Install a Crowdfunding Theme into WordPress
- How to get your website up and running
Step 2: Choosing Your Hosting & Domain Name
So we’ve established why we should build our site using WordPress. We will look into installing the CMS shortly; first however we need to purchase our domain name and hosting service.
Let’s take a look at what that means:
- Domain Name – All websites need a domain name; this is the address that people type into their browser to locate the site. (Ebay.com is an example of a domain name.)
- Hosting – The hosting is where your website data is stored. This is what allows your site to be online 24/7, ready for users to visit.
iPage provides reliable WordPress hosting with excellent live support, starting at just $1.99/month. Furthermore, if you sign up using the link above you will get your first year domain registration absolutely FREE.
They also give you over $500 worth of extras, making it one of the best value hosting deals on the market today.
And remember, when using a high quality, low price hosting service such as iPage, the cost to build an auction website is actually very low.
Note: If you sign up by using our links, we will earn a small commission from the sale at no extra cost to you. We use those funds to run Buildasitelike.com as a completly free resource. We aim to continuing improving the site, adding more valuable guides and helping beginners get started online.
So let’s get started by purchasing our iPage Hosting plan and register our FREE Domain Name.
The first step is to click the Get Started Now Button.
You will now see a page where you can choose your free 1 year, domain registration.
To create this tutorial I have typed in ThisisMyExample.com. I then pressed search to see if it is available.
Nice, your domain is available!
Wonderful, that’s the message you want to see here.
However, don’t worry if your first attempt is staeted as being taken. Popular .com names are very often gone already.
There’s many variations you can try. iPage will also provide suggestions in the results page. There could always be a .net version (and hundred different other extensions) that you could use instead.
Once you have settled on a domain name that is available, press Next, choose my term.
This page will asks you to select a 1, 2 or 3 year duration for your hosting plan.
The length of term really is down to personal preference. Your budget or how long you wish to own the website for may help you decide. The longer term you choose the better savings you will enjoy on the hosting however
For our example we have gone for a two year plan. The total cost of the term will be calculated in the box on the right.
After you have made your choice click Next, customize my plan.
This will take you to a list of optional extras.
The addons are as follows:
- Domain Privacy – You should go for this. It will help stop the persistant spammy emails and automated calls from web design agencies that have looked at the domain sales list and hope you might want their services.
- Website Security & Daily Backup – You should go for these too. For a beginner this is the easiest way to ensure your site remains virus free and fully backed up.
- All in One WordPress Bundle – Unneccessary in our opinion.
- SSL Certificate – Yes to this one. From July 2018 Google will be frowing upon websites that do not have valid security certificates.
After you have chosen all the extras that you want for your new website, click Continue to Payment and fill in your payment details.
(Note, before the payment page you iPage will display a few more pages of added extras. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click ‘no thanks’ to these, they are not required at this stage.)
Well done, Step 2 is almost complete!
After making payment you will see a purchase confirmation screen.
You will now be asked to choose a username, a login password and a security question and answer for your iPage account.
Once you you have done this you will be able to login to your new iPage hosting account. The next step will see us installing your WordPress CMS.
Step 3: Installing WordPress & Your WordPress Auction Theme
i. Installing WordPress Using the iPage SimpleScripts
After logging into the iPage Control Panel you reach a screen such as the one below.
Head to the Website section, and click My Installs (SimpleScripts).
From the script list, click WordPress.
This will take you to another screen where you should leave the default settings as is.
Click Install and iPage will take care of the install for you.
(During this process you will be asked to create some login details (Username and Password) for your WordPress admin area.
Your WordPress Installation is complete.
Now, the front page of your website will be your domain name, (mydomain.com as an example).
With WordPress installed, your website will have the default WordPress theme in place. At the moment it will look a bit bland.
No need to worry though, the next section will see things really taking place…
We’re about to purchase and install your Ebay style theme to bring your new website alive!
ii. Installing a WordPress Auction Theme
We are now at the bit that I like most of all; purchasing and uploading your premium theme so you can lauch your own site like Ebay.
Before we do this however, we will login into the WordPress admin panel.
You can find the location of your WordPress admin by adding /wp-admin after your domain name.
So, if your website domain was mywebsite.com the WordPress admin URL would be: mywebsite.com/wp-admin
When you visit this URL for the first time you will be asked to enter your login details. (This is the Username and Password you chose during the WordPress install.
After that, you will see something like the screenshot below.
As we established earlier, the WordPress admin area is where you can manage your entire website.
It is also where you will be installing your new theme. First, let’s take a little look at the where your current theme is installed.
Head to the left sidebar menu; hover over Appearance, and then click Themes.
The above image is the theme selection page for Buildasitelike.com.
Our selected theme is a Child Theme. This is so we can customize our website in line with our needs. On your theme selection page you will see all the default WordPress themes, (Twenty Eighteen, Seventeen etc).
You can choose a new theme by clicking activate inside the theme details box. You will also see the ‘Add Theme‘ option at the top of the page. We will be using this a little later.
Now, let’s take a look at the WordPress market places where we can buy our auction style theme.
