BEST LOW PRICE HOSTING FOR BEGINNERS

[hr]

Who are iPage?

WHO ARE IPAGE

So who exactly is behind our top rated pick?

Well one of the reasons these guys can afford to provide feature rich hosting at such a low price is that they are part of the large hosting conglomerate, Endurance International Group (EIG).

EIG have been around since the late 90s, (founder Thomas Gorny launched the service back in 1998), and are one of the biggest players in the web hosting space.

FatCow, Bluehost, HostMonster, Just Host, PowWeb, EasyCGI, StartLogic, and Dot5Hosting are just some of the companies that fall under the EIG umbrella – in short, their expertise is second to none.

iPage Hosting on its own now has offices in six worldwide locations serving over one million websites between two data centers in the U.S.

Not only do iPage have ample infrastructure to support all this hosting, as we will see, they have also maintained a high level of customer satisfaction and support alongside their immense growth.

Not all web services are perfect however. Lets take a look at some of the pros and cons of signing up with iPage.

Pros of iPage Shared Hosting

best cheap hosting for beginners ipage

1. Cheap, Inexpensive Hosting

iPage Hosting comes in at an extremely affordable $1.99 per month. You want the best cheap web hosting for beginners – that price is extremely hard to beat, (in fact at the time of writing no full web hosting package does come cheaper).

Furthermore, this is no introductory term special offer arrangement.

When signing up to ipage you get the choice of 1, 2 or 3 year terms. No matter which one you choose, you will get that incredible $1.99 a month rate for the entire term.

That’s amazing value for money.

2. Good Customer Support

I have mentioned this one already, and it really is where I personally have a lot of respect for iPage.

From my time creating client websites I have used countless hosting providers. I kept coming back to iPage however because of the speed and accessibility of their online support.

Whenever my client or myself had an issue, it was simply a case of logging into the account, and clicking the live chat button.

A support representative would be with you at best straight away, at worst within a couple of minutes.

The issue was nearly always resolved from that first chat.

Prefer to open an email ticket, you can do that too.

And of course, some actually like to speak to someone on the end of a phone line. That option is well facilitated also.

One of the trade offs with ultra low budget hosting is the support you can expect to get. Well iPage really does buck the trend there.

In my experience, these guys offer the best customer support out of all of the cheap hosting plans I have reviewed and used in recent years.

3. Top Notch Security & Back Up Options

Today’s internet is rife with hackers, malicious code, and other dubious activity designed to undermine websites large or small.

And this is one area that average cheap hosting providers can be lacklustre on, (or charge extra to cover).

However, with iPage this is not the case.

All their plans come with the industry leading SiteLock Security Suite.

This is powerful, inbuilt software that is designed to be your websites frontline security.

It is an important addition too. In 2014, iPage and SiteLock did a user study and found that 12%+ of subscriber sites contained malware at some point in 2014.

And this is growing year on year.

SiteLock works by regularly scanning your website for malware issues, (malicious code injected by bots designed by hackers).

Once discovered the suite will alert you to the issue so that you can take action.

Choose the option on signup and iPage will automatically get rid of these issues for you, (you also have the option of using a specific online security company such as Sucuri, or security plugins if running a WordPress site).

The suite also creates a firewall to help prevent any potential security leaks.

One of the most important aspects of the iPage web hosting plan is the fact they provide daily backups.

This ensures that if anything goes wrong with your website, you can have a backed up version loaded and up and running in no time at all.

4. Upfront, Honest (Cheap) Pricing

We have covered this to some extent in the affordability section.

The great thing with iPage is that there are no surprises on the cost during the signup process.

So many providers are guilty of this; they advertise a cheap $2.99 a month service yet once you have gone through all the details, there’s a minimum term, additional extras and you end up being charged substantial higher than you expected once you reach the checkout page.

Not with iPage.

Honesty and transparency is one of the most important aspects of a service, especially for a beginner who is uncertain on what they are getting and what they need.

iPage will provide you with the same, cheap monthly price no matter the length of term.

The optional extras are all set out in an easy to understand way, (read anyone of our guides to see what you should opt for).

And of course the first year domain name registration is absolutely free.

Once you reach the checkout page, there are no surprises.

You understand exactly what the price is and why.

5. Third Party Application Support

iPage is compatible with a bunch of external services straight out of the box.

Want to set up a WordPress site? Easy, even without their dedicated WordPress hosting plan you can use the one-click install to have the world’s number one CMS installed on your site.

Connecting up with Google Apps and PayPal is easy if your aim is to set up an e-Commerce store.

And let’s not forget the extras that iPage thrown in free of charge.

The $1.99 a month package will offer $200 of bonus credits on new accounts for Google AdWords, Yahoo, and Bing.

Not bad for the internet’s cheapest beginner hosting plan hey.

6. 30-Day Money Back Guarantee

30 day guarantee

Another great feature for beginners is the 30-day money back guarantee, (I have never had a client need to use this however).

You can sign up with confidence, knowing that if what ever reason you change your mind, you can opt out of the service completely free of charge.

In fact, iPage Hosting claim that as long as you get in touch within the first 30 days they will cancel your hosting no questions asked.

7. Strong Uptime of 99.98%

Uptime is an extremely important issue when it comes to your hosting provider.

The problem with some cheap shared services is that when maintenance of the server needs to be carried out, your site may suffer by the fact it will be down during the repair schedule.

iPage boast some enviable statistics in this regard,

Their average uptime of 99.98% over the past 12 months is .04% better than the industry average, and significantly better than many of the shared plans available from other providers, (stats according to HostingFacts.com)

iPage also features 24/7 uptime monitoring.

This means technicians are on standby around the clock. If a site or server goes down, iPage’s technical support will be available to get things back online ASAP.

This is the kind of service you expect with dedicated hosting. To have that level of support on a $1.99 a month plan is truly outstanding.

8. iPage is an EPA Green Power Partner

EPA-Greenpower partner

Finally, we have the reassuring fact that iPage is an EPA Green Power Partner.

This means that their data centers and web servers are powered by wind energy.

As a result iPage are certified as a green site, and the company purchases enough Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) to offset their energy use by as much as 200%!

In short, by hosting with iPage, you’ll be contributing to their commitment to helping the planet.

Now that’s something to be excited about.

Cons of iPage Hosting

It can’t be all roses however. Like any service at scale, there are some negatives to the iPage hosting plan.

On some issues their level of performance could be better.

Let’s take a look.

1. Lack lustre page load times

ipage page load speed

This undoubtedly stems from being such a popular shared hosting provider.

Servicing over a million websites has to have a detrimental impact somewhere; loading times seems to be one of them.

Whether iPage need to increase of update their servers to meet demand is something we can only guess at, however with an average page load time of 868ms, there are plenty of other cheap hosting providers that can beat iPage on speed.

(As you will see, others in our top 5 bring that average down to an impressive sub 500ms page load speed.)

When you consider that site load time can negatively affect your SEO, this is a cause for concern.

However, a speed of less that one second is still good and well within Google’s recommended levels.

Add that to the fact you can use free WordPress caching and performance plugins to eek out further speed and efficiency, and you no longer really have a problem.

Definitely something to consider before opting for iPage, however it is far from being a deal breaker.

2. Expensive Renewal Costs

So we have waxed lyrical about the amazing value of iPage and their transparent pricing structure; however there is one little issue here.

That fantastic $1.99 a month offer does not continue past your term renewal date.

So while you can enjoy that unbeatable price for up to 3 years should want to, once the initial term has run out you will move to the standard $8.99 a month rate.

That’s a significant hike.

Still in the realm of cheap hosting, but it does then become the most expensive provider in our top 5 list.

Again, something to be prepared for over the long haul.

3. No cPanel

c-panel

As a beginner this negative aspect will unlikely affect you, however iPage do not opt for the industry standard cPanel as the admin area to their hosting.

Instead they use an alternative called vDeck.

It’s still intuitive and easy to use, however considering the rest of the online hosting world uses c-Panel it is a strange choice on the part of iPage.

iPage – An overview of the different plans

In this review we have aimed to highlight the Best Cheap Web Hosting for Beginners. To this end the bulk of our iPage appraisal has looked at the $1.99 a month plan.

Let’s take a brief look at the full range of what the company offers:

iPage-Web-Hosting-in depth-Review

1. Shared Hosting Plan

The subject of this review, the ‘Essential Plan’ as it is currently called starts at $1.99 per month when you first sign up. ($8.99 upon renewal)

It offers 1 year free domain registration, unlimited storage, bandwidth, domain names and MySQL databases.

It also comes with several integrations, apps and site builders like Wix.

An incredible value, low budget hosting plan that is our number one pick for all those reasons and more.

2. WordPress Hosting Plans

iPage have two main WordPress hosting plans.

While in our opinion the beginner website owner may not need this, if you are dead set on having specific WordPress hosting these are definitely worthy of consideration.

  • WP Starter: $3.75 per month. Features a customized control panel designed for WordPress use, and has important plugins preinstalled. You also have a choice of WordPress themes out of the box.
  • WP Essential: $6.95 per month. Same as the Starter plan, but uses a SSD-based infrastructure for better speed and performance. It also has unlimited disk space and malware protection and is designed to handle millions of visitors monthly.

The Bottom Line

Our number one cheap web hosting provider for very good reason. Unlimited bandwidth, sites and databases, along with excellent support and that incredible low, low price.

Yes your site may be a bit slower on iPage (but this can be rectified by other means) and you need to consider the costs come renewal time; however if you are just starting out and wish to dip your toes, (or jump head first) into running your own website, this is the place to start.

2. Blue Hosting Shared Hosting Review

bluehost review

Bluehost are an enormous player in the webhosting space.

Endorsed by some of the top bloggers on the planet, used by over 2 million websites, and even one of the few providers to have the full backing of WordPress, these guys have a formidable presence.

And with their shared hosting starting at $2.99 a month including all the extras you could need, Bluehost do indeed come a close second to iPage in our recommended best cheap web hosting for beginners.

And with a corporate vision that states they wish to create “a better safer web for everyone,” it’s easy to see why the provider is such a popular choice for many.

With all that said, they do have their problems, which we will uncover in this in depth, unbiased review.

First though, let’s have a quick look at what they offer with their lowest priced shared hosting plan:

Overview of Bluehost shared hosting features:
  • Easy-to-use, customized cPanel
  • Dozens of site tool add-ons
  • Free site builders

Who are Blue Host?

Bluehost review

The genesis company behind Bluehost first formed in 1996 however what we now know as Bluehost came about in 2003 after co-founders Matt Heaton and Danny Ashworth came on-board.

At this point the strategy was all about growth, and grow it did, as of 2018 over 2 million websites are made accessible online using Bluehost servers.

Their data center under Utah’s Wasatch Mountains currently houses well over 700 skilled personnel.

Like iPage, the conglomerate EIG took over Bluehost in recent years. Mike Olson is now the CEO of Bluehost with the company running independently in pursuit of their vision of bringing affordable web hosting to all.

Pros of Bluehost Web Hosting

best cheap hosting bluehost

As is the format for our reviews, I’m going to jump straight into the pros and cons section. This way you guys can get a proper understanding of how a service is excelling, and where there could be improvements.

Based on your own personal requirements, this will help you decide which is the best hosting service for you.

So let’s take a look at what Bluehost are currently getting right.

1. Value for money

No arguments here. Their shared hosting couldn’t form part of a best cheap web hosting for beginners if their monthly fees didn’t come in at a good price.

The $2.99 a month price does lose out to iPage on value for money, but this is still highly competitive in the shared hosting space.

An excellent price which ever way you look at it.

2. Performance and uptime

On the uptime stakes, Bluehost actually comes ahead of iPage with a 99.99% uptime. That’s extremely impressive when you consider the amount of users relying on their service.

However, of the small percentage of those that have suffered downtime some have complained about how long it takes for Bluehost to react, (an issue we will look at within the support section).

On the flip side, the company allows you to cancel your hosting agreements because of downtime without having to pay any cancellation fees. But at the end of the day, who actively wants things to occur so you can take that route?

3. Load Times

We complained about iPage’s load time; well if speed is what you want, Bluehost has it in spades, (as far as a cheap shared hosting package goes).

Speed tests by HostingFacts.com found an average page load speed of 419ms. This is highly competitive in the shared hosting space.

The breadth of Bluehosts server penetration also means these speeds can be enjoyed for users all over the world.

For those that don’t make the grade, the fact Bluehost offers free Cloudflare integration straight out of the box is another major benefit. (See more on Cloudflare here).

4. Bluehost security and backups

website security and back up

Security and regular backups are just as good as iPage.

Like our number one pick, Bluehost uses SiteLock to scan your website daily for viruses and malware and also performs 24/7 network monitoring.

Dual quad processors are there to ensure the best performance of your site, as well as provide the daily backups.

Additionally, the company’s servers have an uninterrupted power supply generators to keep things up and running under all circumstances.

5. The Bluehost control panel

Bluehost control panel

Bluehost uses the industry standard c-Panel, but also provides a Bluehost control panel on top of this which is even more user friendly.

This enhanced control panel enables you to manage everything related to your website’s hosting and accounts.

This includes taking care of your domain names, hosting, registration, renewals, or transfers, your email address and inbox configuration, as well as payments/billing for the services you receive.

This all in one management area really does shine, and for ease of use beats the panel provided by iPage hands down.

6. Thorough support materials

As you will see in the cons section of this review, Bluehost sometimes have issues when it comes to live support.

However, one presumes in efforts to over come this, the company has put together a very thorough support portal.

This includes a wide range of how-to-guides, video tutorials, FAQs, and articles a huge variety of issues you are likely to encounter.

Aimed as reference point to lessen the demand on the live technical assistance, there is a lot of great stuff here.

However sometimes you just want to talk to someone to resolve your problems, (especially if you are a beginner) and that’s something the company needs to improve upon.

The Cons

1. Bluehost live help and support

With 2 million users (double that of our top pick iPage hosting service) it is no surprise that the level of support that Bluehost often provides has been met with frustration, (see Trustpilot for some of the most recent customer reviews).

Yes the company does have 24/7 support with the usual live chat, support tickets, telephone, and email all being accessible.

However, the biggest complaint from users is the time it takes to get a response.

Tech questions especially have a high wait time and don’t always get satisfactory answers. While this is not the case for everyone, (in my own experience I’ve not had any problems with the Bluehost support), there’s enough said online about this aspect of the company to be a cause for concern.

2. The Bluehost money-back guarantee

Much like iPage, Bluehost offer a 30-day money-back guarantee.

However, there are some terms and conditions you need to be aware of. Firstly, the money-back guarantee only applies to the hosting plans.

This means that if you opt for any extras including domains, you will not get your money back on these.

Furthermore, cancel after the 30 days, you’ll only receive a pro-rata rate for what’s left on the term.

3. Price hike on the renewal

The $2.99 a month only applies to the first term. Once renewal date comes around you can pay more than 2 times that, (the current regular price is $7.99 however this does flutuate).

Most cheap web hosting does this, the extra value prices do not last for ever.

As with the iPage package, you need to consider the long term costs before you buy.

4. Other small flaws

Bluehost are one of the very few hosting providers that charge a fee to have your site migrated from a different hosting company to their servers.

While for beginners this may not be an issue (we’re assuming you’re building your first website here), if you already have a website and hosting and are considering jumping ship to Bluehost, this migration fee could be a show-stopper in light of the other providers that will take care of this for you.

Another issue that might not impact the average beginner is the fact that Bluehost only offer servers in Linux, Windows hosting is not available. It has never been a problem for me however.

The bluehost hosting packages

Bluehost hosting packages

The great thing about Bluehost is that they offer a variety of different packages, so as your budget and demands grow, the service you use can be updated with ease, (Bluehost make the transition easy with upgrade options)

Anyway, here’s an overview of the different plans that they currently offer:

1. The basic shared hosting (what we have reviewed here)

You have the low down above really. With a promotional term of just $2.99 a month, the Basic shared hosting package includes 50GB of storage, with unlimited monthly data.

They offer a free domain name (that you can only keep for free while using Bluehost hosting) as well as free domain name transfer.

With add-ons and resources to host one website this is an excellent cheap beginner hosting plan and is currently one of the best on the market.

2. The Plus Package

Bump up to $6.95 a month and you can have the Plus Package.

This adds unlimited storage, an anti-spam tool, host up to 10 websites, and 100 mailboxes on top of all the features you get with the starter pack.

3. Additional Shared Hosting Packages

The Prime and Pro Packages are the top plans on the shared hosting servers and these have everything the lower priced plans have with a few bells and whistles on top: SSL certificate, dedicated IP address, there’s also 2 antispam applications, full site backup, and importantly for an expanding online enterprise, unlimited websites and email accounts.

4. Vps/dedicated hosting packages

Dedicated hosting packages are normally outside the realm of the beginner. Your website will be too small to justify the outlay on such services.

That being said, it is good to know that you can expand within the Bluehost ecosystem.

The company offers options such as a Linux-based Ultimate VPS hosting plan with 240GB storage, 8GB memory, and monthly data transfers capped at 4TB, (like we say, if your website requires that kind of power from the outset you’re doing good things).

There is a dedicated server starter plan that might be of interest as your site grows however. This comes with a Linux operating system, 1TB of hard drive space, 16 GB of RAM, and 15TB of monthly data transfers.

5. WordPress hosting

wordpress install

The WordPress hosting is more likely to peak your interest as a beginner.

In fact, if you have a larger budget and would prefer to invest more than just the $2.99 a month on your hosting, one of the following packages could be for you, (assuming you plan to create a WordPress website):

Click the link for more details of each. These plans offer a wide range of features including the pre-installed WordPress CMS, plug-in updates, enhanced cPanel, SiteLock CDN, automatic site backups, and more besides.

Bottom Line

The basic shared starter package from Bluehost is a highly competitive beast.

With tons of add-ons, good site speed and security and excellent uptime, it is easy to see why over 2 million websites are hosted with these guys.

However, when compared to iPage there’s two areas that we consider Bluehost to fall short from a beginner’s perspective; the live support can be delayed and essentially it is more expensive.

If they managed to improve on these two areas Bluehost would be our top pick budget hosting for beginners in 2018.

3. A2 Hosting (Shared Plan) Review

A2 Hosting review

The A2 web hosting team have gone a long way to help change webmaster attitudes that shared hosting plans perform terribly when compared to specialised, dedicated hosting.

And while you obviously get what you pay for, (you can’t expect a $3.99 a month package to be as good as a $150 a month package); the A2 shared plan has some exceptional technical additions that makes them standout from the shared hosting crowd.

And all at a great price too.

Their ‘Lite’ shared hosting plan is one of the best cheap web hosting packages for beginners; not only is it just a mere $3.92 a month, they include what is called SSD (solid state drive based servers – faster and more reliable than standard drive units) as well as a free SSL certificate, (more on that later).

Here’s a quick overview of what you can expect from the lowest price A2 Hosting option:
  • Unlimited RAID 10 storage
  • Unlimited transfer
  • A2 optimised software
  • SSD speed boost
  • Free CloudFare CDN
  • Free site migration by A2
  • The Patchman security tool
  • WordPress features, including integrated ManageWP account and optional WP-CLI (Command Line Interface)
  • Free magazine subscriptions
  • FREE Cloudflare CDN and SSD speed boost solution
  • A2-optimized caching and 1-click CMS installs
  • Up to unlimited email addresses, domains, and databases
  • Advanced security features and FREE HackScan
  • 24/7/365 “Guru Crew” support

Who are A2 Hosting?

A2 Hosting review guide

A2Hosting was launched back in 2001 as Iniquinet, a web hosting startup. The business was based in Ann Arbor, MI.

The business survived the downturn after the .com bubble burst and slowly began to grow.

Just a few years later they changed the company’s name to A2 as a tribute to their base location.

The company has always liked to stay on the cutting edge of server and hosting technology, (A2 became one of the first web hosting providers to support PHP5 in 2004) and this helps explain, both their growth in recent years and the dedication to providing sophisticated hosting solutions on even the lowest price plans.

A2 introduced Solid State Drive (SSD) hosting to support its SwiftServer platform in 2013.

By adding SSDs to their shared hosting infrastructure, A2 helped solidify themselves as a forward thinking company, (as well as great value for money)

Essentially, A2 have grown into one of the most reliable and high-speed web hosting companies around.

This is evident in some of the scores the company has received from industry insiders; A2 has a rating of “A+” (on a scale of A+ to F, with A+ being the highest) from the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

The Pros of A2 Hosting

Pros of A2 hosting

Let’s jump straight into the pros of the ‘Lite’ shared hosting plan, (their cheapest option):

1. Performance – Speed

As explained in the introduction to this A2Hosting review speed is where this company excels; in fact tests show that websites hosted with A2 have the fastest page load speed when compared to the other plans in our top 5.

The company has invested heavily in its infrastructure in order to provide SSD to their shared hosting network..

Add that to their turbo servers (said to be up to 20x faster) you have a consistency of speed that puts others to shame.

Not only that, the SwiftServer platform of A2 also ensures the smooth functioning of your site, irrespective of a heavy traffic load.

Running a viral site with traffic peaks, the A2 shared plan can cope with the action.

That’s definitely something to be reassured about.

2. Data Centres spread across 3 continents

A2’s priority of high performance hosting even for their lowest price plans is further ensured by the fact the company has data centres spread across three continents:

  • Michigan (USA),
  • Singapore (Asia)
  • and Amsterdam (Europe).

This provides you with a server located closest to your target market; again helping to enhance the speed and performance of your site.

Like iPage and Bluehost, the servers are monitored round the clock with fast reaction time should anything go wrong.

3. Uptime

A2Hosting claims to provide a 99.9% uptime guarantee and most of the existing customers confirm this (if the reviews are anything to go by).

This can also be backed up by the fact their server uptime statistics are being tracked by a third-party, such as WebsitePulse.

A2 Hosting go beyond most shared hosting providers by limiting the amount of people on a shared hosting server.

This reduces demand placed on a server (in the event of traffic spikes or maybe even malware contamination); so that server down time his at a minimum.

4. Security and Backup

online security with A2 hosting

A2’s data centres are SSAE16 certified; in other words you would probably have a better chance of breaking into a high security prison.

Both physical security and video surveillance are used to keep tabs on their data centres.

From a technology point of view, A2 offers a server rewind backup facility.

This allows you to recover data from saved account backup snapshots.

Continuous, automatic data security comes in the form of HackScan (which is part of A2’s Perpetual Security initiative), and their dual web hosting firewall.

On top of this they provide virus scanning, security monitoring and a brute force defence mechanism.

The wonderful thing about all of these security measures is that A2 takes care of them all;  they are not add-ons you need to select as extras (and pay more for); every site hosted by them has this security built in, right out of the box.

5. Cloudflare

Cloudflare

You can see all the properties of what CloudFare offers on A2’s CloudFare hosting page.

However, as a summary your site’s pages will automatically be delivered via Cloudflare to help in further with speed and reliability, (Bluehost also offer this option).

6. Customer Support

Being smaller in scale than both Bluehost and iPage, A2 Hosting has created an in-house support team that has received high praise from customers across the board.

Labelled the “Guru Crew Support”, these guys know what they are talking about and provide top notch customer service and support.

This ‘insider knowledge’ means that the A2 support team can answer advanced technical queries without the need to delegate – you get the right answer sooner.

Furthermore the team is available 24×7 and 365 days a year!

The usual forms of communication are available, (live chat, phone calls, and email ticket.)

7. Free Site Migration

website migration for beginners

Listen up Bluehost, if A2 can provide free site migration, why can’t you?

Another positive point for this provider. If you already have your site hosted elsewhere, they will take care of the transfer for you completely free of charge.

8. C-Panel Control Panel

The industry standard control panel, cPanel is used on the shared hosting plan.

As mentioned earlier, this is intuitive and easy for the beginner to pick up and run with.

A2 use Softaculous so you can install WordPress script or scripts of other CMS with just a few clicks.

(Joomla, Drupal and many other applications are also supported).

9. Linux or Windows – you get a choice

Opt for a shared hosting account with A2 account and you can decide whether to go for a Linux or Windows based server.

To be honest, this is probably outside the realm of experience for the average beginner.

As we are looking for the best cheap hosting for beginners we recommend the Linux plan, (for more information on the differences between the two head here).

10. 30-day money back Guarantee

As with both Bluehost and iPage, A2 offers a risk-free 30-day trial complete with anytime money back guarantee.

This is an important reassurance for a beginner. Not only does it show that the provider believes in their product, it also gives you a chance to get out if things don’t live up to expectations.

Pro-rated refunds are also available (based on your usage) if you end up deciding to cancel after the initial 30 days.

The Cons

1. Price

A2 is a technically advanced shared hosting provider. Their Lite plan has some excellent additions.

However, at $3.92 a month it is almost double the price of iPage.

And while we are not talking tons of money here, when looking for the best cheap hosting plan, it is clear the competition is under-cutting them on price.

Furthermore, this lowest rate $3.92 is only available if you sign up for a 2 year plan. iPage allows their $1.99 price on any term.

Want a shorter term with A2 and you will have to pay $4.90 a month.

Suddenly it isn’t so cheap anymore.

2. No free domain registration

On top of your monthly fee, you will also have to pay for your first year domain registration.

Again this won’t break the bank at around $15 per year (+VAT); however we are starting to add up our price here.

Taking A2 Hosting further away from the amazing value set by other hosting providers.

The A2 Hosting Plans

A2 Hosting plans

A2 actually have a wide variety of hosting packages. With the split between Linux and Windows based servers they have 6 shared hosting plans alone.

Add that to the dedicated hosting, Cloud based hosting options, VPS hosting and it all starts to get a overwhelming, (especially within a review article aimed at beginners).

The bottom line is, one of the shared hosting plans is what you should be looking at. For this review we have covered the ‘Lite’ package.

To find out more on what else they offer, head here.

Bottom Line

Overall A2 Hosting is an excellent option for beginners willing to pay more for better page load speed and customer support. However, when you consider that a one year term is 3 times the price of the iPage lowest priced package, it does raise questions.

Clearly not the cheapest web hosting service but one of the most technically advanced in the shared hosting space. If you want to stretch the budget, the Lite package comes highly recommended.

4. Hostgator Shared Hosting (Hatchling) Review

hostgator review

Houston-based HostGator is a titan in the world of web hosting.

While iPage and Bluehost may seem large with 1 and 2 million users respectively, Hostgator host a mammoth 9 million domains.

That’s an incredible amount of data.

So are they any good? Are all those user signed up because of brilliant performance and price points?

Or do Hostgator just offer super rewards to affiliates (those that promote hosting companies) with a giant marketing budget to match?

Before we dive in to take a look, here’s an overview of their lowest price ‘Hatchling’ shared hosting plan and our score:

Who is Hostgator?

hostgator review

HostGator started out in 2002. Originally founded by Brent Oxley, they are another of the growing hosting companies that got bought out by Endurance International Group (EIG).

These days the company has two U.S. based data centers in Houston and Provo, Utah.

They have also moved into the rapidly expanding Indian market after opening up offices there in 2012.

It is actually difficult to pinpoint the reason behind Hostgators massive success when compared to their competitors.

Marketing has had a large part to play because as we will see, they are not 9 x better than our top pick iPage, (if you base this upon number of domains hosted)

Let’s dive in with the pros and cons so you guys can see for yourself.

Pros of using HostGator (shared) Hosting

thumbs up

As always we like to start with the good points.

And Hostgator do stand out from the competition in two easy ways to measure; a longer-than-average money back guarantee and an easy-to-use interface for beginners.

1. 45-Day Money Back Guarantee

Considering all of the other web hosts in our top 5 review round up offer only 30 day money back guarantees, Hostgator opting for a 45 day time line is significant.

This gives you an extra two weeks to test drive their hosting before fully commiting.

As we have said ealier, that’s some peace of mind that a beginner wants.

With all that said, there are a few terms and conditions behind this extend play:

  • Only applies to shared, reseller, or VPS hosting, (great for us)
  • If you pay for your package with a check, money order, or through a bank wire transfer, you won’t get your refund. So take care of the way you pay.

2. Very User Friendly for Beginners

hostgator cpanel

HostGator is very user-friendly for beginners.

The interface is highly graphical and intuitive, taking point and click management to a whole new level.

In fact it feels as if the entire c-Panel has been redesigned so that the complete novice can get to grips with what it all means as soon as they login.

In a round up looking at the best affordable beginner hosting, this is a very important point.

Furthermore, they have tons of tutorials that are well laid out, along with FAQ pages, documents and video walkthroughs to cater for any problem you might have.

3. Good Uptime

For a service that caters for 9 million websites, Hostagtor’s uptime is a highly impressive 99.97%. This is .03% better than the industry average for shared hosting.

You can keep an eye on the uptime with sites such as HostingFacts.com.

4. Enhanced Security and Free Migration

HostGator are another web hosting provider more than willing to offer free migration services should you want to move your site over, (again, why are you charging for this Bluehost?)

Another great aspect for the beginner, (or any webmaster for that matter) is the automated daily database backups, automatic malware removal and a free SSL certificate for processing website transactions.

HostGator also provide sophisticated protection against DDoS attacks.

In short, even though your website is on a shared hosting plan (we’re security risks are greater), Hostgator up the anti in regards to site protection.

Cons of using HostGator (shared) Hosting

hostgator hatchling review

Despite raising above the bar in a few important areas, there’s some essential performance based issues that Hostgator fall short.

1. Site page load speed

With 9 million websites hosted it comes as no surprise that Hostgator fail to beat the competition on page load speeds.

Where as A2 Hosting have invested heavily in this like SSD technology and super servers, Hostgator lag behind with averages close to 1 second.

Again, this isn’t outside the paramaters set by Google on what is considered acceptable; it is still damn slow when compared to other web hosts in our list.

The fact is smaller hosting providers have the ability to turbo charge their offerings even in the shared space; the lumbering giant that is Hostgator is currently unable to keep up.

2. Struggling support

The HostGator support nearly went in the pros section of this review.

This is because we personally have never had any complaints when managing sites on Hostgator, (and obviously calling upon their support team for assistance).

However, there’s an abundance of complaining customers online not happy with the response time of Hostgator support. But then when do happy customers get the motivation to report online?

That being said, when people are reporting 20 minutes for a live chat to begin you do have to ask questions. The trade off of having 9 million hosted sites maybe?

You only need make a cursory check through online reviews of hostgator to find less that lacklustre appraisals of their support.

And that is cause for concern.

As with all the other providers in this review, they do offer 24/7/365 support through the phone, live chat, and email.

So as long as you can handle a potential wait, (put the kettle on, browse Facebook) you will get hold of someone eventually.

Or as in our case when calling upon help, with a couple of minutes.

3. Extra fee for automatic Backups

hard drive back up

Despite the fact we praised HostGator security options, they do fall short on back up protection.

Yes, they make it easy to perform manual backups by default in cPanel; however, how many beginners are going to regularly login initiate that?

If you want automated backups it will cost you an extra $15.95 annually.

4. Price Hikes

Hostgator opt for the oldest pricing structure ‘trick’ in the book; i.e to benefit from that low, low price they advertise of $2.64 a month, you have to sign up for 3 years.

That’s just one more reason that iPage is our top choice; their amazing $1.99 a month deal is available on all terms.

Select the 1 year term with Hostgator and you will end up paying $5.37 a month.

What was the second lowest price in our top 5 cheap hosting for beginner round up, now becomes the most expensive.

Shame on you Hostgator.

As with all other hosts offering promotional prices, expect a further price hike come renewal time.

Other web hosting plans with Hostgator

Hatchling plan

The subject of this review is the shared hosting Hatchling plan. Starting at $2.75 per month, (as long as you opt for the 3 year term), this provides 1 domain name, unlimited disk space and storage and unlimited subdomains.

Baby plan

The promotional price on this one over 3 years is $5.95 per month. It supports unlimited storage, bandwidth and domain names.

Business plan

The final plan on Hostgator’s shared hosting starts at $5.95 per month.

Here you get unlimited storage, bandwidth and domain names. You will also get a free dedicated IP, SSL and toll-free number with this one.

We’ve just cover the shared hosting options today. Should you be interested in other forms of hosting through Hostgator, head here.

Bottom Line

So are the owners of 9 million websites right in choosing Hostgator?

Yes and no.

It is clear that this hosting provider is doing many things right. With good uptime, online support materials and an easy to use interface for beginner’s, they have a lot of happy customers as a result.

However, if some of these customers knew what was available elsewhere, they might think differently.

Hostgator is not the cheapest basic provider by any means. Their live support has issues for some, and average site load speed can be terrible.

With options like iPage for mega cheap rates, or even A2 Hosting with the superior technology we recommend you look elsewhere.

5. Web Hosting Hub Shared Hosting Review

web hosting hub review

Web Hosting Hub are another great option for beginners looking for quality hosting at a discount price.

For those starting out they offer a free domain. Site builder and some great eCommerce tools are also thrown in with their cheapest package.

We’re a big fan of WordPress here, and to that end the plan comes with Softaculous 1-click software installer straight out of the box.

Let’s take a look at what else you get with their lowest rate $3.99 a month plan.

Web Hosting Hub shared hosting features at a glance:
  • Adequate page load times (718ms)
  • Just above average uptime (99.95%)
  • Good customer support
  • Very easy website and blog setup
  • Free domain name and site migration
  • Solid state hard drives
  • 90-day money back guarantee
  • Green web hosting/environmentally friendly

Who are Web Hosting Hub?

webhostinghub review

Founded in 2010, Web Hosting Hub are owned by the conglomerate InMotion Hosting.

They are headquartered in Virginia Beach, VA, and they have two U.S. data centers – one on each coast.

What’s great about this hosting service is that they have a 200+ U.S. based team, with only 40,000 customers.

That’s borderline bespoke when compared to the stretch of our other hosting picks that cater for up to 9 million domains.

The tech here is similar to A2 Hosting with the company investing heavily in solid state drives and superior security protocols.

Anyway, before we cover too many of the details here; let’s jump in with the pros and cons of using Web Hosting Hub.

Pros of using Web Hosting Hub

site-page load speed

1. Faster Page Load Times than the Competition

We’ve already touched on it above, however with the installation of a complete SSD infrastructure, Web Hosting Hub claim to be up to 20x faster than the competition using standard drives.

While tests from a page load perspective do not demonstrate a 20 times difference, there’s no denying that the Web Hosting Hub servers are fast from a shared hosting perspective.

Often clocking in at around the 600ms region, this is significantly faster than the close to 1 second times experienced with other hosts.

2. Good Support

With only 40,000 customers you would expect a good level of support, and with Web Hosting Hub, you won’t be disappointed.

Live chat wasn’t an instant pick up on a couple of occasions (a 2- minute wait at one point); however, once the security checks are complete you can expect a thorough response to your issues.

Beyond our own use of their support team, customers online generally rate the Hub highly in this regard.

3. Easy Website/Blog Setup

web hosting hub amp-account-management-panel

We actually loved how easy Web Hosting Hub was to sign up to and get started.

Clearly designed for the absolute beginner, there’s no jargon or complicated price and term structure, (they make it clear that the rock bottom price comes with the longer term).

Using their Account Management Panel (above) you will have you hosting and site up and running in no time.

With a simple click you can install WordPress as your website/blog content management system or Prestashop for eCommerce.

They take care of everything else.

4. Free Domain Name & Site Migration

This ease of use and beginner friendliness goes as far as any site transfer too.

The team will transfer up to three websites and databases for you, with zero downtime on top.

For complete newbies or those looking to start a brand new site, a free domain name is offered on signup too.

5. 90-Days Money Back Guarantee

90-Days Money Back Guarantee

Another killer bonus in terms of the beginner webmaster. Not sure if you want to keep with Web Hosting Hub for the long term?

They will give you a full 90-day money back guarantee. More than enough time to trial the goods and back out if you aren’t happy.

That being said there are a few non-refundable fees to be aware of.

If you purchase a SSL certificates, domain privacy you will not get your money back. The free domain name is also non-refundable.

If you decide not to proceed you will be charged $11.99 for the year plus a $5.00 administrative fee.

6. Okay Uptime

Finally we have the all important down time / uptime issue. I am pleased to say that Web Hosting Hub is above industry average here with an uptime of around 99.95.

The Cons

1. Basic Hosting

While Web Hosting Hub is a very simple hosting service to use (making it ideal for beginners), once your site grows and your skills develop you could end up out-growing their hosting.

Unlike others in our top 5 there are no alternative plans to move onto beyond the shared host packages.

If you want to expand power and services in the future you will literally have to move hosts.

2. Price Tricks

That $3.99 a month deal is only available for 3 year terms. Yes they are pretty clear about it, however it does mean that if you opt for a 1 year plan, you will end up being charged $6.99 a month.

That’s terrible compared to the competition reviewed here.

So be wary when you sign up. And maybe go for the 3 year in the first place knowing you have 90 days to reconsider anyway.

3. Extra Fees for Backups & Security

To have automated daily backups with the Hub will cost you an extra dollar each month.

They also charge extra for anti-virus and anti-spam protection.

While these will add little to the overall cost, the price is still getting further away from the amazing deals you can get elsewhere with the likes of iPage and Bluehost.

Other Hosting Plans on the Hub

As mentioned above, unlike other web hosts, Web Hosting Hub only offers shared hosting.

Here is a quick overview of the plans

  • Spark plan: The subject of this review. Opt for this and you will pay $3.99 per month (on the 3 year term). You can launch 2 websites, have 10 MySQL databases and 25 sub domains.
  • Nitro plan: $6.99 per month. With this you can have unlimited websites, unlimited sub domains and unlimited MySQL databases
  • Dynamo plan: This plan costs $8.99 per month. It supports unlimited websites, unlimited sub domains and unlimited MySQL databases.

All shared hosting comes with a free domain name, are hosted on SSD and come with SSH access.

Bottom Line

Web Hosting Hub is a good budget web hosting service.

With their easy signup, helpful support and instant WordPress installation they are great for first-timers starting a simple blog or creating a small website.

However, if you need to grow, you may need to look elsewhere as they do not offer anything beyond the shared hosting options.

On top of this you do have to opt for the 3-year plan to enjoy the large discount.

In short, there are better options in our top 5 round up.

So if you’re ready, let’s get to it…

Step 1: Choosing the Platform for your Website

how to build a live streaming website – 30

The easiest way to make a live streaming website in 2018 is build it on top of an established web content platform. These platforms are called “Content Management System (CMS)”.

Why use a Content Management System (CMS)?

There’s so many reasons to use a Content Management System we could fill an entire article on the subject. However, the bottom line is, speed, efficiency and security.

Using a CMS is perfect for a beginner because it removes so much of the technical know-how that gets in the way of creating a website.

The traditional method requires skills in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (to name but a few). And while some purists will say you need to know these complex languages to build a ‘real’ website, that simply isn’t true.

A content management system (CMS) does all that heavy lifting for you. You just concentrate on creating and publishing your content. Once you have set up your CMS, it will take care of everything else for you.

Let’s take a closer look at what that actually means.

What does a Content Management System (CMS) do?

how to make a live streaming website

A content management system provides an intuitive interface from which you create and manage all of your site content.

Just as you login to your Facebook account to post pictures, written text, links and updates, the CMS of your website will allow you to do the same.

Once you login to your website you can add pages, posts, images and text with ease. In fact you can easily change the entire style of your website by selecting one of the many ‘Themes’ that are readily available.

In the case of a live streaming website you can select an appropriate theme or plugin (more on that below), install that into your CMS, and then have a fully functioning website that will allow you to manage videos, as well as user profiles, submissions, payment methods and much, much more.

The whole system is very easy to use and once you get started is perfect for absolute beginners.

Why choose WordPress to build a video streaming website in 2018?

wordpress logo

In our opinion, WordPress is the best CMS for a live video streaming site today. Here’s some reasons why:

  • It is absolutely free
  • It is very easy to use (perfect for beginners)
  • There are thousands of templates you can add to WordPress to control the way your website looks
  • It is very easy to customize to your own personal needs
  • WordPress plugins increase the functionality of your website to accommodate almost any type of online business
  • Your site will look great on all screen sizes
  • WordPress is continually updated to ensure superior website performance and security

In this tutorial we will show you how to create a wordpress live streaming website

To do this we will cover the following practical steps:

  • How to choose the best Web Hosting for WordPress
  • How to register a Domain Name
  • How to Install WordPress onto your hosting
  • How to Install a Video sharing Theme into WordPress
  • How to Upload the first bits of content to get started

Step 2: Hosting & Domain Name

Now that we have decided to use the WordPress CMS, the next stage is to purchase our hosting and Domain name.

Let’s take a moment to describe the terms we have just used there:

  • Domain Name – The domain name is the web address people type to find your website; Facebook.com is a famous example.
  • Hosting – Web hosting is is the service you will use to store all your website content so it is available for people to access online. Every website uses Web Hosting and a domain name.

We’ve partnered with iPage, one of the best WordPress hosting providers to bring our readers a Great Value deal. If you sign up using the link below you will receive a whopping 75% Discount on your hosting plan & a FREE Domain Name

Note: If you sign up by using our links, we will earn a small commission from the sale at no extra cost to you. We use those funds to run Buildasitelike.com as a completly free resource. We aim to continuing improving the site, adding more valuable guides and helping beginners get started online.

iPage provides Feature-rich WordPress hosting with top-notch live support, starting at just $1.99/month. On top of the free first year domain registration they also throw in over $500 worth of extras on sign up. It really is one of the best hosting deals on the market today.

So let’s go ahead and purchase our iPage Hosting plan and register our FREE Domain Name.

Click this link to open the iPage Website in a new window

From here you will need to click the Get Started Now Button.

This will take you to a screen that will give you the option of choosing your free domain name.

For this tuutorial I have chosen thisismyexample.com and pressed search to find out its availability.

Excellent, the results page states that the domain is available. (Remember, you have the option to try anything here, however more obvious domain names will often be taken)

If you find what you choose is already gone, you could opt for one of the alternative domains suggested in the results. This will also show you different extensions, (.net .org etc) that could be used.

Once you have settled on a domain name that is free, it is time to press Next, choose my term.

The next screen will give you the option of  a 1, 2 or 3 year term for your hosting plan.

The length of term you choose is very much up to you. If you are on a tight budget you might want to opt for the 1 year plan.

In our example we have chosen a two year plan. You will see the full amount calculated in the box on the right side of the screen.

After selecting your hosting duration you can press Next, customize my plan.

Here you will be able to select or deselect various options for your plan.

The options are as follows:

  • Domain Privacy – You should select yes here. This will stop spam phone calls, emails and texts from design agencies that have taken your contact details from the domain register.
  • Website Security & Daily Backup – This is the easiest way for beginners to keep their website secure and to ensure that daily backups are made. So click yes here.
  • All in One WordPress Bundle – This unneccessary.
  • SSL Certificate – Say yes to this. From July 2018 Google started to penalise websites that do not have valid security certificates. To have one is important now.

After you have customized your plan, click Continue to Payment. Here you will purchase your hosting plan using a credit card or paypal account.

(Note, you may have to skip through a couple of pages of extra offers. You can say ‘no thanks’ to all of these as they are not really neccessary).

Well done, step 2 is nearly complete!

You will receive a success message stating that your hosting has been successfully purchased. After this a screen will appear asking you to create your login details for iPage.

After completing this step we will move on to installing WordPress and your live video streaming website theme.

Step 3: Installing WordPress & a Live Video Streaming Theme

wordpress install

i. Installing WordPress Using iPage SimpleScripts

After logging in to your iPage control panel you will see a screen similar to the one below:

First click My Installs (SimpleScripts).

Then locate WordPress from the list and click.

This will take you to another screen where you simply need to leave all the settings as they are.

On this page Click Install and iPage run the install script on your website so you can use WordPress.

They’ll be one more screen asking you to agree to the terms and conditions, click complete and…

Success!

Your WordPress Installation is complete.

You can visit the front page of your website by going to your domain name, Example: mydomain.com.

The default WordPress theme will be the template of your site at the moment. Without any content things will look very basic indeed.

However, all that is about to change.

We are now going to add your theme so we can turn your website into a live video streaming site like Twitch!

ii. Installing a Live Stream WordPress Theme

how to make a streaming website like twitch

With the CMS up and running it is time to look for our WordPress live streaming theme.

First we will get ourselves orientated with the theme selection area in WordPress.

To do this we will need to login to the WordPress admin panel.

This can be accessed by adding /wp-admin after your domain name. So if your site domain is mywebsite.com the admin URL becomes: mywebsite.com/wp-admin

When you visit this URL you will be asked to enter your username and password; (this is the login for WordPress that you created during the install process).

A screenshot of the WordPress admin dashboard.

After successful login you will be taken to the WordPress Dashboard as shown above. This is the main admin area of your website and is where all the magic happens 🙂

The theme selection area can be found by heading to the left sidebar menu. Hover over Appearance, and click on Themes.

The WordPress themes selection page

The image above is from the Buildasitelike.com theme selection page. We currently have the latest default WordPress themes installed, as well as our main blogging theme called Sparkling.

These are no good for a live streaming website however. For that we need something specific, it is time to search for a premium theme that is up to the job.

The Best Place to Buy Premium WordPress Themes

[Disclosure: Some of the links below are affiliate links, meaning at no additional cost to you, we will earn a small commission if you click through and make a purchase.]

There’s an almost unlimited supply of premium WordPress themes online. This also means there are lots of theme marketplaces to choose from.

However, the quality does vary.

When looking to buy a premium wordpress theme, it is important to use a reputable market place with a strict content quality review processes.

In other words, you want to know that the themes they are selling are of high quality and are well tested. After sales support is also important, especially for a beginner.

In our opinion, the best Premium Themes marketplaces can be narrowed down to the following list:

What’s the best video live streaming template for WordPress?

wordpress live streaming theme

For the purpose of this tutorial, we will be using a WordPress theme called VideoPro from Cactus Themes. This can be found on a highly reputable marketplace called ThemeForest.

We’ve test driven a number of live streaming themes and VideoPro came out top on a number of factors.

It has a beautiful, uncluttered design meaning the video stream stands out above all else. It is very easy to integrate live YouTube streams, and with the excellent user login interface, your visitors can stream their live links too.

The theme is also consistently kept up to date by it’s author and offers great speed, security and overall functionality.

Everything you need in one, easy to use package basically.

Click here to open the ThemeForest website in a new tab.

live stream wordpress theme

You should now be on the main VideoPro sales page.

Click the Buy Now button to be redirected to the checkout page.

Fill in your First name, last name & email address then click Next.

You will be asked to choose your ThemeForest username and password. Verify the captcha, click the Create account & Continue Button.

After filling in your billing details, click the Save and continue button.

Available Payment Methods

ThemeForest and the Envato Marketplace offer secure payment options via 3 main methods.

Debit/Credit card and PayPal have a 2$ surcharge, with Envato Credit you can avoid this.

After payment, hover over your username in the top right corner of the screen and click on downloads.

Here you will find the VidoePro theme in your downloads area (as in the screenshot below).

Themeforest Downloads Page

Click the green download button.

This will provide you with two options:

  • All files and Documentation – This is a package download (in the form of a .zip file) that contains the theme, licence information and other related documentation)
  • Installable WordPress files only – a single .zip file containing your theme.

We will only need to download option two; installable WordPress files only.

Click and download the zip file to your desktop, (and leave it in the zip format).

Next, head to your main WordPress dashboard again (mywebsite.com/wp-admin), and return to the theme selection page, (hover over Appearance and then click on Themes).

Installing the VideoPro theme & Plugins

This is the most exciting part of the whole process.

We are now in the final stages of setting up your live streaming website.

To make it even easier, the VideoPro theme author’s have created a very simple install method.

With your theme zip file at the ready, just follow the video above to quickly and easily, install the theme.

Importing the sample data

Once that is done you will then use the theme’s one-click sample data installer. This will mean your site will look exactly the same as the demo site at the start of this guide.

With the demo content in place you can begin customizing your website to create a streaming site unique to you.

And creating your first live stream couldn’t be easier; simply add your live stream URL from one of the many live stream platforms available, (Youtube, Facebook, or Twitch for instance) and the stream will automatically embed seemlessly into your site.

All fron end visitors will see your video action, live as it is recorded.

Congratulations you’ve just built your very own live video streaming website!

  • Step 1. Which Website Platform to Use
  • Step 2. How to Choose a Domain name & Hosting provider
  • Step 3. How to Install the Website Platform, your Social Network Theme & Basic Setup Instructions

After completing the above steps set you will have your very own auction website.

All this can be done in a little over 30 minutes!

Before we jump into creating our website, let’s discuss some of the basics with step number 1.

Step 1: Which Website Platform to Use (The CMS)

how to make a site like ebay

If you are researching how to make a bidding website like eBay, the best way to start is by using a well established website platform. This is known as the “Content Management System” (or CMS).

Why do I need a Content Management System (CMS)?

We cover this is everyone of our website guide on Buildasitelike.com. When it comes to building a site, we always recommend you use a CMS. There’s a number of reasons for this.

Firstly, a sophisticated Content Management System will allow you to build your website without the need of knowing any code.

This opens up the wornderful world of web design and online businesses for those that do no not want to spend years learning technical languages such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

Furthermore, a CMS along with a well designed template will allow you to launch a website with tons of functionality, in no time at all.

Finally, the most widely used CMS online, a system called WordPress, is absolutely free.

Before we take a closer look at WordPress, let’s talk about what the CMS actually does.

So what does a Content Management System (CMS) do?

how to make a bidding website

A content management system is the foundation of your website. Everything else is built on top.

The CMS allows you to create and manage the design, content and overall function of your site all from within an easy to use admin area.

It is not that disimilar to updating your Facebook profile. Once logged into Facebook you can very easily upload images, write posts and comments and leave links, all with a few clicks of a button.

A CMS is the system that allows you to do the same with your own website. Images, text and all other website content and function can be managed using a simple to use interface.

The entire design of the site can also be controlled using the CMS. In the case of WordPress it is just a case of installing an appropriate theme.

In the case of our auction website, we will install our CMS and then choose a theme that will give us all the function we need for people to sell items and for others to bid on them.

This will include login interfaces for users as well as reliable payment gateways and sufficient security. (And remember, our site will bne able to do all of this without you touching a single line of code).

In a nutshell, a good CMS allows a complete beginner to launch their own website with ease.

A Closer look at WordPress (What does it have to offer?)

wordpress install

WordPress is by far the most popular CMS on the planet. Here’s a few reasons why:

  • The system is completely FREE to install and use.
  • WordPress is designed for beginners to feel comfortable straight away (yet experienced users love it too)
  • There is almost an endless supply of themes that will control how your site looks (we are talking hundreds of thousands).
  • WordPress plugins allow you to increase the functionality of your website as it grows.
  • It is easy very to customize
  • WordPress and most themes are responsive in design; i.e they will look great on any screen size.
  • WordPress is fast and secure and is constantly being updated

For this tutorial we will be showing you how to create a website like Ebay using WordPress.

To do that, the guide will now cover the following:

  • How to get started with the best Web Hosting for WordPress
  • How to register a Domain Name
  • How to Install WordPress onto your hosting
  • How to Install a Crowdfunding Theme into WordPress
  • How to get your website up and running

Step 2: Choosing Your Hosting & Domain Name

So we’ve established why we should build our site using WordPress. We will look into installing the CMS shortly; first however we need to purchase our domain name and hosting service.

Let’s take a look at what that means:

  • Domain Name – All websites need a domain name; this is the address that people type into their browser to locate the site. (Ebay.com is an example of a domain name.)
  • Hosting – The hosting is where your website data is stored. This is what allows your site to be online 24/7, ready for users to visit.

We’ve partnered with iPage, in our opinion one of the best beginner WordPress hosting providers around. If you sign up using the link below you will receive a whopping 75% Discount on your hosting plan & a FREE Domain Name

iPage provides reliable WordPress hosting with excellent live support, starting at just $1.99/month. Furthermore, if you sign up using the link above you will get your first year domain registration absolutely FREE.

They also give you over $500 worth of extras, making it one of the best value hosting deals on the market today.

And remember, when using a high quality, low price hosting service such as iPage, the cost to build an auction website is actually very low.

Note: If you sign up by using our links, we will earn a small commission from the sale at no extra cost to you. We use those funds to run Buildasitelike.com as a completly free resource. We aim to continuing improving the site, adding more valuable guides and helping beginners get started online.

So let’s get started by purchasing our iPage Hosting plan and register our FREE Domain Name.

Click this link to open the iPage Website in a new window

The first step is to click the Get Started Now Button.

You will now see a page where you can choose your free 1 year, domain registration.

To create this tutorial I have typed in ThisisMyExample.com. I then pressed search to see if it is available.

Nice, your domain is available!

Wonderful, that’s the message you want to see here.

However, don’t worry if your first attempt is staeted as being taken. Popular .com names are very often gone already.

There’s many variations you can try. iPage will also provide suggestions in the results page. There could always be a .net version (and hundred different other extensions) that you could use instead.

Once you have settled on a domain name that is available, press Next, choose my term.

This page will asks you to select a 1, 2 or 3 year duration for your hosting plan.

The length of term really is down to personal preference. Your budget or how long you wish to own the website for may help you decide. The longer term you choose the better savings you will enjoy on the hosting however

For our example we have gone for a two year plan. The total cost of the term will be calculated in the box on the right.

After you have made your choice click Next, customize my plan.

This will take you to a list of optional extras.

The addons are as follows:

  • Domain Privacy – You should go for this. It will help stop the persistant spammy emails and automated calls from web design agencies that have looked at the domain sales list and hope you might want their services.
  • Website Security & Daily Backup – You should go for these too. For a beginner this is the easiest way to ensure your site remains virus free and fully backed up.
  • All in One WordPress Bundle – Unneccessary in our opinion.
  • SSL Certificate – Yes to this one. From July 2018 Google will be frowing upon websites that do not have valid security certificates.

After you have chosen all the extras that you want for your new website, click Continue to Payment and fill in your payment details.

(Note, before the payment page you iPage will display a few more pages of added extras. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click ‘no thanks’ to these, they are not required at this stage.)

Well done, Step 2 is almost complete!

After making payment you will see a purchase confirmation screen.

You will now be asked to choose a username, a login password and a security question and answer for your iPage account.

Once you you have done this you will be able to login to your new iPage hosting account. The next step will see us installing your WordPress CMS.

Step 3: Installing WordPress & Your WordPress Auction Theme

wordpress

i. Installing WordPress Using the iPage SimpleScripts

After logging into the iPage Control Panel you reach a screen such as the one below.

Head to the Website section, and click My Installs (SimpleScripts).

From the script list, click WordPress.

This will take you to another screen where you should leave the default settings as is.

Click Install and iPage will take care of the install for you.

(During this process you will be asked to create some login details (Username and Password) for your WordPress admin area.

Well done!

Your WordPress Installation is complete.

Now, the front page of your website will be your domain name, (mydomain.com as an example).

With WordPress installed, your website will have the default WordPress theme in place. At the moment it will look a bit bland.

No need to worry though, the next section will see things really taking place…

We’re about to purchase and install your Ebay style theme to bring your new website alive!

ii. Installing a WordPress Auction Theme

We are now at the bit that I like most of all; purchasing and uploading your premium theme so you can lauch your own site like Ebay.

Before we do this however, we will login into the WordPress admin panel.

You can find the location of your WordPress admin by adding /wp-admin after your domain name.

So, if your website domain was mywebsite.com the WordPress admin URL would be: mywebsite.com/wp-admin

When you visit this URL for the first time you will be asked to enter your login details. (This is the Username and Password you chose during the WordPress install.

After that, you will see something like the screenshot below.

A screenshot of the WordPress admin dashboard.

As we established earlier, the WordPress admin area is where you can manage your entire website.

It is also where you will be installing your new theme. First, let’s take a little look at the where your current theme is installed.

Head to the left sidebar menu; hover over Appearance, and then click Themes.

The WordPress themes selection page

The above image is the theme selection page for Buildasitelike.com.

Our selected theme is a Child Theme. This is so we can customize our website in line with our needs. On your theme selection page you will see all the default WordPress themes, (Twenty Eighteen, Seventeen etc).

You can choose a new theme by clicking activate inside the theme details box. You will also see the ‘Add Theme‘ option at the top of the page. We will be using this a little later.

Now, let’s take a look at the WordPress market places where we can buy our auction style theme.

How to start a business like Amazon – A reality check

how to build a website like amazon

Amazon is a multi-billion dollar company, with at the time of writing there are almost 600 million products listed on it’s website. Jeff Bezos is also currently the richest person on the planet.

This may well be an obvious point to make, but by following this guide you will not be in a position to take on Amazon at it’s own game.

However, you will be able to create a fully functional e-commerce website that allows independent vendors to list products for sale.

And similar to Amazon’s business model, you will be able to charge vendors advertising or commission fees for listing products on your site.

In short, once your site is launched and you have spent time growing your audience you will have a business generating income in much the same way as one of the most successful enterprises in the world today.

And that’s definitely something to be excited about!

So without further delay, let’s take a look at stage 1 so we can get our website build underway…

Stage 1: Which Website Platform to use & why

how to start a business like amazon

One of the easiest ways to build a website like Amazon in 2018 is to utilize an established website platform. This is commonly called the “Content Management System” or CMS for short.

Why do website owners need Content Management System (CMS)?

A Content Management System takes a lot of the complicated, hard work out of building and running a website. As a beginner you will definitely want this.

A good CMS makes getting started online very simple. It will provide you with an easy to use interface where you will be able to design and manage the content on your website, without the need of learning any complex code.

The world’s most popular CMS is called WordPress and is very user friendly. It is also completely free to use.

We will take the lid off of WordPress shortly. First, let’s discuss a little further what the Content Management System does.

What does a Content Management System (CMS) do?

how to create a multi vendor website

The content management system allows the website owner to control every aspect of their site using an intuitive interface.

In may ways the process is similar to the way you manage your Facebook account.

Once you have logged into your Facebook page you can post pictures, comments and updates all with just a few taps of the keyboard or phone.

The CMS will give you a similar easy to use system to control your website.

From your CMS dashboard you can alter the whole look of your website, add new pages with written content and images, as well as install plugins that will increase the overall functionality of your website.

And remember, we can do all of this without touching a line of code.

The whole system has made web creation available to everyone, no matter their skillset.

Why choose WordPress as the CMS for your Multivendor website?

How to build a multi vendor marketplace using wordpress

WordPress is the industry leader when it comes to simple to use CMS. When looking to build a multi vendor marketplace, WordPress really does provide everything you need.

Let’s look at just a few reasons why this CMS should be your go to choice:

  • WordPress is completelt FREE and very easy for beginners to use.
  • The internet has an almost endless supply of WordPress guides and tutorials covering everything you would ever need to know about building and managing your site.
  • WordPress has a ton of options when it comes to e-commerce. From premium themes (much like we will discuss below); to sophisticated plugins that will do all the work of running a multi-vendor product website for you.
  • Your site will be ‘responsive’ meaning it will look good on all screen sizes.
  • WordPress is constantly being updated in order to provide superior website performance, functionality and security.

In this tutorial, we will show you how to build a multi vendor marketplace using wordpress.

Now we have coverd the basics of the CMS and why you should opt for WordPress, the rest of this guide will cover the practical steps of building your new website.

This will include:

  • Purchasing the best Web Hosting for WordPress
  • Registering a FREE Domain Name
  • Installing WordPress on to your hosting plan
  • Installing a Multi-Vendor WordPress Theme that will give you Amazon style functionality
  • Uploading demo content so that you have a template in place ready for launch

Stage 2: Choosing your Hosting & Domain Name

Stage 2 is all about choosing our Hosting Service and Domain name.

Let’s spend a moment explaining these terms:

  • Domain Name – The domain name is the web address that leads to your website. www.Amazon.com is an example of a well known domain name.
  • Web Hosting – The Web hosting service is what you will use to store all your website data so it is available online, 24/7. Every website needs to have Web Hosting of some kind.

We’ve partnered with iPage, one of the best WordPress hosting providers available for beginners.

In our opinion, iPage is the best hosting service for beginners available today

The service provides feature-rich WordPress hosting with excellent live support, starting at only $1.99/month.

Not only that, iPage offers a FREE years domain registration as well as $500 worth of extras on sign up.

We have searched around and this is currently the best hosting deal you will find in 2018

So let’s go ahead and purchase our iPage Hosting plan and register our FREE Domain Name.

Click this link to open the iPage Website in a new window

Once you have reached the iPage home screen you will need to click the Get Started Now Button.

This will then take you to a screen where you will be asked to choose your own domain name.

For this tutorial we typed in “ThisIsMyExample.com”. After typing in your desired domain name, you will press search to see if it is available.

Nice, the domain name is available!

Don’t worry, if you receive a message that states the domain has already been taken. This is very common, especially for .com domains.

However, with new extensions being release all the time, there are still many variations available.

You can either try a different name or maybe opt for a different extension such as .net. In the case of an e-commerce site you could even try .store

The results page will show you available alternatives so make sure you browse through this for ideas.

Once you have chosen an available domain, click Next, choose my term.

This screen gives you the option to choose a 1, 2 or 3 year term for your hosting plan.

The term you choose is completely up to you. Your budget and how long you wish to own the website for are all determing factors.

In our example we opted for a two year plan. (The plan total will be calculated on the right-hand side of the screen).

After choosing your term press Next, customize my plan.

Now you will be offered a number of addons for your site.

They are as follows:

  • Domain Privacy – Select yes for this. Domain Privacy will help stop spam phone calls and texts from design agencies that have looked at the domain sale database and seen you have recently bought a domain name. With Privacy set to yes they will not be able to contact you.
  • Website Security & Daily Backup – We recommend yes here too. These two extras are the most beginner friendly ways of keeping your site backed up and virus free.
  • All in One WordPress Bundle – This unneccessary, your chosen theme and our other guides will show you what plugins you need right out of the gate.
  • SSL Certificate – Say yes to this. From July 2018 Google will penalise websites in search that do not have valid security certificates. You will definitely need one for an e-commerce store that takes payment from users.

After customizing your plan, click Continue to Payment.

(Note, iPage will display more offers to you. Scroll to the bottom of each page and click ‘no thanks’, until you see the purchase confirmation page).

Well done, Stage 2 is almost complete!

After the iPage payment confirmation, you will be taken to a screen where you can create your username, login password and other security details.

Once you have finished this, you will be able to login to your iPage hosting account by clicking the login button at the top right side of the screen.

Now we can actually start building your new website!

It’s time for the final stage…

Stage 3: Installing WordPress & a Multi-Vendor e-Commerce Theme

wordpress logo

i. Installing WordPress Using the iPage SimpleScripts

Once you have logged into your iPage control panel you should see a screen similar to the one below:

Click My Installs (SimpleScripts).

On the next page Click WordPress.

You can leave the default settings on this next page as they are.

Click Install and iPage will begin the all important process for you.

Part way through the install you will be asked to create your login details (Username and Password) for the WordPress admin area.

Finally, after agreeing to the WordPress terms and conditions, you can click complete and…

Congratulations! WordPress is now installed

We are really getting somewhere now.

However, there is still one more important step to make.

If you head to the front page of your website (by entering the domain name; example: mydomain.com), you will see only a very basic version of your website.

This is the default WordPress theme in place. With this theme and next to nothing in the way of content, your new website still looks a million miles away from the Amazon style enterprise that you aim to launch.

Not for much longer however.

It is now time to purchase and install your multi-vendor e-commerce theme!

ii. How to install a Multi-Vendor e-Commerce WordPress Theme

how to build a website like amazon

With the WordPress installation in place, we can now transform your site into the Amazon clone that you are after.

First we need to login to the WordPress admin panel.

You can do this by adding /wp-admin after your domain name.

Using our mydomain.com as an example; the admin URL would be: mydomain.com/wp-admin

This screen will ask you to enter the username and password, that you chose during the WordPress install process.

A screenshot of the WordPress admin dashboard.

Once you have successfully logged in you will see a screen similar to the image above.

This is the main WordPress admin area of your website.

This is where all the behind the scenes magin takes place.

As explained when we covered the CMS details earlier, the WordPress admin area will allow you to publish new content, install plugins, and with the aid of a theme, give your site the look and function of a successful e-commerce store.

Before we move on to purchase our relevant theme, let’s spend a moment to get aquainted with the theme installation page.

For this you will need to move your cursor to the left sidebar menu and hover over Appearance. Cick on Themes.

The WordPress themes selection page

The screenshot above is taken from Buildasitelike.com.

We have have many of the default WordPress themes installed, however only one theme is currently active. (A Child Theme; we have chosen this because it allows us to safely customize the site to our needs).

However, to create a website like Amazon we are going to need a something else.

For that we would need to purchase a premium theme.

Where to Buy Premium WordPress Themes online

[Disclosure: Some of the links below are affiliate links, meaning at no additional cost to you, we will earn a small commission if you click through and make a purchase.]

There are a ton of WordPress theme marketplaces online. A quick Google search will show you that.

However, when buying a new theme you will want to make sure the market place you are buying from is trusted.

Reputable marketplaces will offer extensive customer support, as well as a strict quality review process on the themes that they list for sale.

In our opinion, the best Premium Themes can be found at the following places:

What’s the best multi-vendor WordPress Theme?

martfury wordpress theme

To build a multi vendor marketplace we fully recommend an excellent theme called MartFury. This can be found via ThemeForest, one of the most established theme stores online.

We have come to the conclusion that MartFury is the best multi-vendor worpress theme available after extensive testing.

Not only does this all-in-one option mean that you do not have to go out and purchase expensive plugins in order to enjoy full e-commerce functionality, it also provides complete one-click install and comprehensive demo content meaning an absolute beginner can hit the ground running with their new site.

Not only is it novice friendly, MartFury also has a whopping 4.92 out of 5 stars average rating. With over 622 sales at the time of writing, this theme is definitely proving popular.

With all that said, it is now time to visit ThemeForest so we can purchase our new theme.

Now you will be asked for your billing details.

Fill in the relevant details and then click Save and continue.

We will be selecting option number 2; the installable WordPress files only.

Click and download the zip file to your desktop.

With the siles safely on your local hard drive, head to your main WordPress dashboard again (mywebsite.com/wp-admin).

We will now be returning to the WordPress theme selection page we visited earlier.

Hover over Appearance and then click on Themes.

Installing MartFury into WordPress

This is where your Amazon style will really start to take shape. Very soon we will have a fully functional multi-vendor e-commerce store.

As mentioned earlier, the authors of MartFury have designed their theme so that can be easily installed by absolute beginners.

The video above will show you exactly how that’s done.

Once installed, the video below will show you in just a few simple steps how to upload all the demo content so that you have a fully functional website, just like the one we showed you at the beginning of this article.

Uploading the demo content

An overview of the final steps

To make sure we take you to the very end of the process, here’s a quick overview on what the installation and demo upload videos will cover.

  • How to install the MartFury theme.
  • How to one-click install all the plugins that came packaged with your new theme
  • How to upload all the demo content so that you have a fully functional site ready for launch

Remember, installing the demo content will mean that your website actually looks completely finished. This give you something that you can begin marketing to potential vendors so that they will list their products on your site.

With the demo framework in place, you can add and delete content as you see fit, until you have a website that is ready to receive vendor payments and commission fees.

Watch out Jeff Bezos, there’s a newcomer in town! 🙂

Launching a new website is such an exciting journey, and good on you for jumping in. Now its time to take a look at step number 1…

Step 1: Choosing a Website Platform (CMS)

what CMS to choose for your website

One of the easiest ways to make a site like Tripadvisor in 2018 is to use a fully built website platform. These commonly come in the form of a “Content Management System” or CMS for short.

Why a Content Management System (CMS) is a must for any website owner?

A Content Management System takes all the complication out of building and running a website. This makes them perfect for beginners and experts alike; they make life simple for website owners.

Also, a good CMS will remove the many things that make web design seem difficult to the absolute beginner. At its heart the CMS is there to provide a simple interface for you to manage every aspect of your site.

It also means that anyone can get started online. There’s no longer any need to spend several years learning complex programming languages.

And best of all, the most popular CMS on the internet, (a system called WordPress) is absolutely free to use.

Before we dive into the nuts and bolts of WordPress, let’s take a closer look at what a content management system actually does.

What does a Content Management System (CMS) do?

what does a cms do?
The content management system is the beating heart of your website

As we have already stated, the CMS allows you to manage your website from a simple to use admin area.

A good way to think about this is to compare it to when you login to your Facebook account. Once there, you can post text and image updates, create galleries, change your profile and header images and a whole lot more.

The interface is mostly point, scroll and click.

The content management system of your website works in much the same way. You login and using the interface you can add new posts and pages, add images, create galleries, control all the content for your site basically.

Furthermore, you can alter the whole look of your website by choosing which theme to use. (The theme is the ‘skin’ of your website. It is the overall design and style of your site.)

The CMS also allows you to install plugins that will increase the overall functionality of your website.

For our Tripadvisor website we will choose a theme and plugins that replicate all the functionality of the famous holiday, listings review site.

This will allow your users to post reviews; businesses to post listings and all the other things you need to run a successful website.

And remember, we can do all of that without needing to learn a single line of code.

This is why the CMS is so important.

Why choose WordPress as the CMS for your listings review site?

Wordpress cms

There are many reasons you should use WordPress when building a site like Tripadvisor:

  • WordPress is absolutely FREE and as we have explained, perfect for beginners.
  • There are an almost unlimited supply of WordPress guides and tutorials available online to help you.
  • Thousands of themes available to contriol the way your website looks with just a few clicks of a button.
  • WordPress plugins allow you to increase the functionality of your website making it suitable for any type of online business.
  • The right WordPress theme will mean your website will look great on all screen sizes and formats
  • WordPress provides superior website performance, functionality and security and is constantly being updated in order to maintain this.

In this tutorial, we will show you how to create a review website like Tripadvisor using WordPress

So we have covered some of theory behind your website and why the CMS is so important. The rest of this guide is where you will need to roll your sleeves up and start creating. We will now dive into the process of building your website. The steps will include:

  • Choosing the best Web Hosting for WordPress
  • How to Register a FREE Domain Name
  • How to Install WordPress on to your hosting plan
  • How to Install a Business Directory Theme into WordPress
  • How to Upload the demo content that Builds your Website

Step 2: Hosting & Domain Name

Step 2 is where it all starts happening. It is time to choose our hosting and Domain name.

As our guide is designed for absolute beginners, let’s spend a brief moment describing those terms.

  • Domain Name – The domain name is the web address that people will type into their browser in order to visit your website. www.tripadvisor.com is a good example of a domain name.
  • Web Hosting – All websites need hosting. It is the service that stores all the data of your website so it is available online 24/7.

We’ve partnered with iPage, one of the best WordPress hosting providers available for beginners.

In our opinion, iPage is the best beginner hosting service online today.

The service provides excellent hosting with readily available live support, starting at an extremely low $1.99/month.

Not only that, iPage will give you a FREE years domain registration as well as $500 worth of extras on sign up. It really is one of the best hosting deals around.

So let’s go ahead and purchase our iPage Hosting plan and register our FREE Domain Name.

Click this link to open the iPage Website in a new window

Once you have reached the iPage home screen, click the Get Started Now Button.

This will take you to the screen below where you will be asked to choose your domain name.

For this tutorial I have typed in “ThisIsMyExample.com”. After typing in the domain name I pressed search to see if my idea was available to use.

Nice, the domain name is available!

This is what you want to see. However, don’t be disappointed if the name you try is already taken. Many popular .com names are being used by other websites.

However, you will find that there are still many variations available.

For instance, the results page will display a list of alternatives with extensions such as “yourdomainname.net, or .site etc.

You might even want to try “yourdomainname.review“, the choice really is up to you.

Once you have decided on a domain name that you can use click Next, choose my term.

Now it is time to choose whether you would like a 1, 2 or 3 year term for your hosting plan.

Again the choice is yours. Your budget and how long you would like to own the website for can all be determing factors.

In our examples we chose a two year plan. (The plan total price will appear in the box to the right of the screen).

After choosing your term length press Next, customize my plan.

Now you will be given a list extras you can select for your website hosting plan. They are as follows:

  • Domain Privacy – We recommend you select yes here. Domain Privacy will stop your details being readily available online. This means you should not be inundated with spam phone calls and texts trying to sell you web design services.
  • Website Security & Daily Backup – We recommend you select this too. Having these taken care of by your hosting is the most benginner friendly way of ensuring your site stays backed up and virus free.
  • All in One WordPress Bundle – This is unneccessary.
  • SSL Certificate – Say yes to this. From July 2018 Google will start showing warnings on websites in search that do not have valid security certificates.

After customizing your plan, click Continue to Payment.

(Note, iPage will display more offer pages before you reach the payment page. Click ‘no thanks’ at the bottom of each page until you see the payment screen).

Well done, Step 2 is almost finished!

After entering your payment details and completing your purchase, you will reach a screen asking you to create a username, login password and other security details.

Once done, you will be able to login to your iPage hosting account by clicking the login button at the top right side of the screen.

Now things are really starting to happen; it is time to installing WordPress and a new listings review theme.

Step 3: Installing WordPress & a Tripadvisor theme

wordpress

i. Installing WordPress Using the iPage SimpleScripts

After logging in to your iPage control panel you will see something very similar to the screenshot below.

Click My Installs (SimpleScripts).

On the next page Click WordPress.

On the screen you reach, leave the default settings as they are.

Click Install and iPage will start doing all the heavy lifting.

It is a fast process however, so there will not be much time to make a cup of coffee.

Furthermore, during the install process you will be asked to create some login details for the actual WordPress admin area.

Finally, say yes to the WordPress terms and conditions, click complete and…

Well Done!!

Your WordPress Installation is complete.

Now, if you head to the front page of your website (by entering the domain name; example: mydomain.com), you will see a live version of your website.

It will look underwhelming to say the least.

With little content and only the default WordPress theme installed things will be very barren. There is still an important step to go through before your site will look anything like Tripadvisor.

However, don’t worry, we are very nearly there.

It is now time to purchase and install your Tripadvisor style WordPress Theme!

ii. How to install a Trip Advisor WordPress Theme

mylisting theme on screen

With WordPress fully installed its now time to add a theme that will transform your website into a working Tripadvisor style site.

To do this we first need to login to the WordPress admin panel.

This is done by adding /wp-admin after your domain name.

Using our mydomain.com as an example; the admin URL would be: mydomain.com/wp-admin

The screen you reach will ask you to enter the username and password. This is the one you created during the iPage SimpleScripts WordPress installation.

A screenshot of the WordPress admin dashboard.

After you are logged you will be sent to the main WordPress admin dashboard.

This is where all the magic is conjured.

As we discussed earlier in the article, the CMS admin area will allow you to publish new content, install plugins, change your menus and styling and much, much more.

Our first step however, is to check out the theme installation page.

This can be reached by locating the left sidebar menu; hovering over Appearance, and clicking on Themes.

The WordPress themes selection page

You will now find yourself looking at a similar screen to the one above.

The screenshot here is taken from Buildasitelike.com.

Like most new websites we have have many of the default WordPress themes installed. Only one theme is currently active however. We are using a Child Theme because we have customized the site so heavily.

However, standard themes would not provide the functionality required to launch a Tripadvisor style website. For that we need to purchase a premium theme.

Best Place to Buy Premium WordPress Themes online

[Disclosure: Some of the links below are affiliate links, meaning at no additional cost to you, we will earn a small commission if you click through and make a purchase.]

You do not need to look far to find WordPress themes. The competition is fierce with theme marketplaces littered all over the web.

However, this does make it a buyer’s market. It doesn’t matter what type of site you want to create, there will be a theme out there to cater for it, (a quick Google search will definitely tell you that much).

That being said, you should choose the most reputable theme marketplaces to make your purchase. As a beginner, a theme vendor offering good support and regular updates is a must.

Market places with strict guidelines on the types of themes they sell are also worth hunting down. In essence, they have done their due diligence for you.

Or you can rely on our recommendations. 🙂

In our opinion some ofd the best Premium WordPress Themes can be found here:

What’s the best Tripadvisor WordPress Theme

mylisting wordpress theme

To create a website like Tripadvisor we fully endorse a theme called, MyListing – one of the most advanced directory WordPress themes available. You will be able to purchase this at one of the most reputable marketplaces online, ThemeForest.

Our choice comes from much trail and error on the many Tripadvisor template themes currently available. We want to ensure we are recommending only the best as part of our guide.

The reviews and customer feedback on Mylisting are also worth mentioning; at the time of writing the theme has an average of 4.91 stars out of 5, (with almost 5000 sales).

So let’s head over to ThemeForest so we can purchase our new theme.

Click here to open the ThemeForest website in a new tab.

Mylisting wordpress theme

The link above will take you to the main MyListings Theme sales page.

Click the Buy Now button.

On the checkout page, fill in your First name, last name & email address then click Next.

If you are not an existing member of ThemeForest, you will be asked to create a username and password.

Verify the captcha, click the Create account & Continue Button.

This next step will ask for your billing details.

After completing these, click Save and continue.

Available Payment Methods

3 secure payment methods are available when you use the Envato marketplace: Debit/Credit card, PayPal and Envato Credit.

Debit/Credit Cards and Paypal will incurr a 2$ surcharge however these are the most convenient payment methods for the first time buyer.

That being said, if you think you’ll be buying a number of themes it does make sense to add credit to your Envato account. There is no surcharge with that particular method of payment.

A confirmation success message will appear once you have made payment.

Now the exciting part – time to download your MyListings vacation directory theme!

Hover over your username (you will find this in the top right corner of the screen) and click downloads.

Themeforest Downloads Page

The above screen will appear and your Quibla theme will be ready for access.

Click the green download button.

Two options will be revealed:

  • All files and Documentation – Here you have access to the theme, licence information and other related documentation, all in one zip file.
  • Installable WordPress files only – Just the theme files only, in one single .zip file.

We will be selecting option number 2; the installable WordPress files only.

Click and download the zip file onto your computer.

Now, head to your main WordPress dashboard again (mywebsite.com/wp-admin).

We will now be returning to the WordPress theme selection page we checked out earlier.

Instead of a boring old WordPress default template, we are going to install our wonderful MyListing theme.

To do this, hover over Appearance and then click on Themes.

Installing the MyListings Theme  into WordPress

This is where your new vacation directory will really start to take shape.

Very soon we will have your very own Tripadvisor clone.

To make life easy for the beginner, the authors of MyListing have created a video showing you exactly how to install your theme, and all the demo content to get started.

With your downloaded theme file ready on your desktop, follow the video above to quickly and easily, launch your new vacation listings directory.

An overview of the final steps

To make sure we take you to the very end of the process of setting up your new website, here’s a look at what the installation video will cover:

  • Exactly how to install the MyListing theme into your WordPress website.
  • How to install all the necessary plugins that came packaged with the MyListing theme.
  • How you can upload all the demo content to have the same website as the one we showed you at the beginning of this guide.

Remember, installing the demo content means your website will be fully setup, ready for you to begin entering your own content too.

Essentially, you will be fully ready to accept listing from customers as well as reviews.

With the demo framework in place you can easily begin building your site until you have a finished product that is uniquely yours.

Move aside Tripadvisor, there’s a newcomer in town.

Congratulations you’ve just built your very own Tripadvsior listings website

So enough with introductions, it is definitely time to get to it…

Step 1: Choosing the Website Platform (CMS)

One of the quickest and easiest ways to start a crowdfunding website in 2018 is to use a well established, existing platform. In website terms, this is called a “Content Management System (CMS)”.

Why use a Content Management System (CMS)?

We have explained this elsewhere on Buildasitelike.com, and the reasons remain the same. No matter the type of site you want to build using a CMS has a lot of benefits, the chief ones being, speed, efficiency and security.

For a beginner, the idea of building a website can be daunting. The whole concept seems wrapped up in technical terms such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript and other hard to understand jargon that it’s no wonder so many people think it is beyond them.

The fact is, in 2018 anyone can make a sophisticated website by simply using a content management systems (CMS). There is absolutely no need to learn any strange computer coding languages to succeed online.

A good CMS along with a well designed theme is all you need.

Furthermore, one of the best and most popular CMS’ (WordPress), is absolutely free.

Before we lift the lid off the wonders of WordPress, let’s take a brief look at what a CMS actually does.

What does a Content Management System (CMS) do?

wordpress cms

A content management system is the backbone of your website. Once installed it allows you to create and manage the design, content and overall function of your site, all from an easy to use admin area.

In many ways it can be compared to logging into your Facebook page. The CMS gives you a simple interface with which to post images, text and all other website content.

You can also control how your website looks and functions by installing one of the many ‘Themes’ that are readily available.

With our crowdfunding website, we will use the CMS and a carefully chosen theme so that others can login and build their own campaigns, visitors can pledge money and you can manage all the finer details; without needing to know any of the technical nuts and bolts whatsoever.

Essentially, the CMS allows a complete beginner to launch their own website with ease.

So, why choose the WordPress CMS for your Crowdfunding site?

wordpress

WordPress is the best CMS for your crowdfunding platform. Here’s why:

  • It is completely FREE
  • Very easy to use no matter your technical skill level
  • Thousands of designs (Themes) are available that control the look of your website (and can be installed with a click of a button)
  • Easy to customize and extend.
  • WordPress plugins allow you to increase the functionality of your website in line with your demands.
  • WordPress looks good on all types of screen, (laptop, desktop or mobile)
  • WordPress is fast and secure and is always being updated

For this tutorial, we will show you all the steps to starting a crowdfunding website using WordPress

This is what we are about to cover:

  • How to get started with the best Web Hosting for WordPress
  • How to register a Domain Name
  • How to Install WordPress onto your hosting
  • How to Install a Crowdfunding Theme into WordPress
  • How to get your website up and running

Step 2: Hosting & Domain Name

So we’ve chosen WordPress as our website platform.

Now we need to purchase a hosting service and buy a Domain name.

Here’s a simple explanation of why we need these:

  • Domain Name – This is the web address; you need one of these so people can find you online. Every website has one. (take Facebook.com for example)
  • Hosting – This is the service that stores all of your website data so that it is accessible online. Again, every website needs to have Hosting.

This will lead you to a page where you can choose your free domain name.

For this tutorial I have typed in ThisIsMyExample.com and then pressed search to see if it is available.

Good stuff, the domain name I have tried is free.

Don’t worry if you find the name you would like to use has already been taken. This is common. However, you can always try variations and if you look at the results page you will find that iPage offers some suggestions too.

If the .com version is already taken, you can always opt for a .net version or something similar instead.

Once you have found a name that you would like to use (and importantly seen that it is available), it is time to press Next, choose my term.

You will now find yourself on a page that asks you to select a 1, 2 or 3 year term for your hosting plan.

The length of term is entirely up to you. However, the longer you choose the better the overall discount you get.

In our example we have chosen a two year plan. The right hand box will show you the cost for the term

Make your choice and then press Next, customize my plan.

This will take you to a list of options you can choose to select or deselect before you buy.

The optional addons are as follows:

  • Domain Privacy – This really is worth buying. It will help prevent any spam phone calls and texts from design agencies that have discovered you have just bought a domain name.
  • Website Security & Daily Backup – We recommend selecting yes on these. This is the easiest way to ensure your website remains secure and that daily backups are made. (It is possible to take care of both of these tasks using WordPress Plugins however).
  • All in One WordPress Bundle – This is unneccessary.
  • SSL Certificate – You should purchase this. From July 2018 Google will penalise websites that do not have valid security certificates.

After you have chosen the extras that you need, click Continue to Payment to make the final purchase with credit card or paypal account.

(Note, before you reach the payment page you may have to skip through two pages of optional extras. You will not need these, so scroll to the bottom of the page and click ‘no thanks’, until you reach your purchase confirmation page).

Well done, Step 2 is almost finished!

After payment you will be greeted with a success message. A new screen will appear asking you to create a username, your login password and security question for your iPage account.

After completing this you should login to the account so that we can install WordPress and launch your crowdfunding website.

Step 3: Installing WordPress & a Crowdfunding Theme

wordpress install

i. Installing WordPress Using iPage SimpleScripts

Once you are logged into the iPage Control Panel you will see something similar to the below screenshot.

Under the Website section, locate My Installs (SimpleScripts) and click.

From the scrip list, click WordPress.

This will take you to another screen where you simply need to leave all the settings as is.

Click Install and iPage will do the rest for you.

They’ll be another screen asking you to agree to the terms and conditions. When prompted you should also enter the login details (Username and Password) you would like to use for WordPress. And then…

Success!

Your WordPress Installation will be complete.

The front page of your website will be your domain name, (mydomain.com as an example).

WordPress will have automatically installed the default theme for your site. Without content it will all look very bland.

Don’t worry, this next section is where it all gets very exciting.

We’re about to purchase and install your crowdfunding theme so you can launch your new website!

ii. Installing a Crowd Funding Theme

So far so good. WordPress is fully installed on your website, and now it is time to purchase and upload your crowdfunding theme so you can lauch your own Kickstarter business.

Sounds simple? That’s because it is.

The first step involves login into the WordPress admin panel.

The location of your dashboard is easily found by adding /wp-admin after your domain name.

For example, if your website domain was mywebsite.com the WordPress admin URL would be: mywebsite.com/wp-admin

When you visit this URL for the first time you will be greeted with the WordPress login page. Here you will need to enter your username and password, (this is the login for WordPress that you will have selected during the install process), and then you will be taken straight to your admin dashboard.

A screenshot of the WordPress admin dashboard.

The WordPress admin area gives you access to all the menu options you need to manage your website.

What we need to do now is get that new theme up and running.

Before we look in to where you can purchase your crowdfunding theme, we will begin by taking a look at the WordPress theme page.

You will find this in left sidebar menu. Hover over Appearance, and then click Themes.

The WordPress themes selection page

The above image is the theme selection page for Buildasitelike.com. We currently have a Child theme selected. The Twenty Seventeen, Sixteen etc are the default WordPress themes and will be what you see when you first visit your own theme page.

However, since you’re here to make a Crowdfunding website, we need to find a WordPress theme that will give you all the functionality you need to launch your new site.

For that we are going to need a premium theme.

The best place to buy high-quality WordPress Themes

[Disclosure: Some of the links below are affiliate links, meaning at no additional cost to you, we will earn a small commission if you click through and make a purchase.]

To find high-quality WordPress themes you will need to turn to visit one of the many premium theme market places that exist online.

However, because themes are big business, there are countless options with varying quality. We have done our homework in this regard. The team here at BuildaSiteLike.com has over 35 years combined experience working with WordPress, (there’s only 4 of us).

Between us we have tried and tested most, if not all the larger premium theme players. From that expertise we recommend the following market places when you are looking for a theme for your website.

What’s the best Crowdfunding WordPress Theme?

There are many Crowdfunding themes available, however only a few offer the wide range of features required to run a complete crowdfunding platform like Kickstarter. Of those few we have found what we believe to be the best of the bunch.

Backer, by KrownThemes is our top choice for a number of reasons. It features a clean, sophisticated design allowing for your user’s campaigns to really stand out.

The login process is simple and combined with the excellent Ignition Deck plugin (which is required for full platform functionality) your website can take payment from pledgers, allocate funds when targets have been reached and basically allow you to manage the entire platform with an easy to use interface.

So if you’re ready, let’s go ahead and purchase the Backer theme so that we can transform your website into a real business.

Click here to open the ThemeForest website to purchase your new theme.

The link above will take you straight to the Backer Crowdfunding Theme sales page.

(By all means have another look at the theme demo to see what your site will look like – in just 5 minutes time!)

The payment steps are self explanatory. After clicking the Buy Now button:

  • Fill in your First name, last name & email address then click Next.
  • Choose your ThemeForest username and password.
  • Verify the captcha
  • Click the Create account & Continue.
  • After filling in your billing details, click the Save and continue button.

Available Payment Methods

ThemeForest and the Envato Marketplace is a well respected merchant for WordPress themes. They offer secure payment via 3 different methods, Debit/Credit card, PayPal and Envato Credit.

Use of the first two will incur a 2$ surcharge, however the convenience is more than worth it.

Envato Credit does not incur the surcharge however you will need to add credit to your Envato account.

Once you have made payment via your preferred method, hover over your username in the top right corner of the screen and click on downloads.

Here you will find the Backer theme files, ready and waiting; (much like the screenshot below).

Themeforest Downloads Page

Click the green download button.

This will reveal two options:

  • All files and Documentation – This is a package download (in the form of a .zip file) that contains the theme, licence information and other related documentation)
  • Installable WordPress files only – as the title suggests, this is just one .zip file containing your theme.

Option number two is the one we need; installable WordPress files only.

Click the link to download the theme file to your desktop.

Once that’s done, head to your main WordPress dashboard again (mywebsite.com/wp-admin), and return to the theme page, (hover over Appearance and then click on Themes).

Installing the Backer theme in WordPress

This is where things get very exciting. With just a few clicks your crowdfunding website will start to come alive.

What we are going to do now can be broken down into a few simple steps:

  • Uploading the Backer theme to your WordPress website
  • Installing all the relevant plugins to make the website work properly
  • Uploading a import file so that your site looks just like the demo
  • Final touches so you can launch your crowdfunding platform

Installing the Backer theme

To install the theme you need to go to your theme selection page.

  • Navigate to Appearance > Add New Themes > Upload.
  • Select the Backer zipped theme folder that you recently downloaded to your desktop.
  • Hit “Install Now” and the theme will be uploaded and installed.

Once the theme is uploaded you will be given the option to Activate theme. Click to activate.

The next step is to install the required plugins.

Installing the theme plugins

The theme authors have very kindly provided one-click install for all the plugins you need.

After theme activation you should receive a prompt at the top of your WordPress admin area, asking you to Begin Installing Plugins.

Clicking this prompt will take you to the plugins download page.

There you will find a list of all the plugins you need. Click install next to each item.

The plugins are as follows:

  • IgnitionDeck – This plugin is the heart of your crowdfunding website. More on this below.
  • Revolution Slider – this is one of the most popular WordPress sliders around. Installing the theme demo file will get this up and running for you.
  • Krown Shortcodes – This is theme shortcodes generator. Shortcodes allow you to quickly and easily insert buttons, columns and other design features into your site. When using the theme demo file you will need this plugin installed so that everything looks the way it should.
  • oAuth Twitter Feed for Developers – If you decide to create a Twitter page for your platform, this plugin will integrate the feed into your website.

The Ignition Deck Plugin

The theme authors have kindly provided the free version of the Ingnition Deck plugin. This is great if you just want to create a crowdfunding site for one campaign. However, for a full Kickstarter style platform, you will need the premium version.

There are two options if you wish to have a full crowdfunding platform that allows users to create campaigns:

Head here to visit the IgnitionDeck website

Using the Backer Demo Import File

Using the demo import file is the best way to get started with your new website. This will turn your website into something that looks like the demo, meaning the design, structure and functionality of the site will be done for you.

Once installed you can delete the old campaigns (or leave in place as a way of encouraging new users) and add new content within the foundation that has been created for you.

To install the theme demo files you need to locate the xml import file within your theme folder on your desktop (backer-import.xml). (Make sure the IgnitionDeck plugin installed and activated before doing the import!)

To use it, go to Tools > Import > WordPress and upload the xml file.

When prompted, Import everything, hit the button and wait.

Congratulations you’ve just built your very own Crowdfunding website

Once complete your site will look like this: (Click image for live version)

In a little over 30 minutes this website could be yours

So if you are ready, let’s dive in with step number 1..

Step 1: Which Website Platform to use & why

Choosing a CMS

One of the fastest ways to build a site like Yelp in 2018 is to use an already established website platform. This is called the “Content Management System” or CMS for short.

Why do website owners need Content Management System (CMS)?

A Content Management System makes life a lot easier for website owners. As a beginner you will definitely need one.

A good CMS will take away all the difficult stuff that creates a barrier of entry to web design. It provides a simple to use interface from which you can manage your website.

It also means a beginner can build a website without the need of knowing any complex code.

Another added bonus is that the world’s most popular CMS, a system called WordPress, is absolutely free.

We will take a closer look at WordPress in a moment. First, let’s explain a little on what the Content Management System does.

What does a Content Management System (CMS) do?

laptop

As we mentioned previously, the content management system allows the website owner to control every aspect of their site from an easy to use admin area.

You can think of this process similar to the way in which you login to your Facebook account.

Once you have access to your page you can post pictures, comments and updates all with just a few clicks of a button.

The CMS will allow you to do the same with your website. Once you are logged in you can alter the whole look of your website, (by choosing one of the many themes available).

You can also add new pages with written content and images, as well as install plugins that will increase the overall functionality of your website.

When creating a business directory website we will choose a theme and plugins, that will allow users to post business details, select the type of listing they require as well as accept payment for premium listings.

And we can do all of this without touching a line of code.

The whole system is very intuitive and is designed for absolute beginners to pick up and run with.

Why choose WordPress as the CMS for your Business Directory?

wordpress

There are many reasons you should use WordPress as the CMS to your website like Yelp; here’s a few of them:

  • WordPress is absolutely FREE and perfect for beginners to use.
  • The internet is chock-full of WordPress guides and tutorials that can help you with any query you may have.
  • There are thousands of themes to choose from. These can be used to transform your website into any type of online business.
  • WordPress plugins allow you to increase the functionality of your website in line with your changing needs.
  • Your site will be ‘responsive’ which means it will adapt its design to any screen size.
  • WordPress is updated all the time in order to provide superior website performance, functionality and security.

In this tutorial, we will show you how to a build a business directory using WordPress

The rest of this guide will cover the practical steps of building your new website. This is what we will cover:

  • Choosing the best Web Hosting for WordPress
  • How to Register a FREE Domain Name
  • How to Install WordPress on to your hosting plan
  • How to Install a Business Directory Theme into WordPress
  • How to Upload the demo content that Builds your Website

Step 2: Hosting & Domain Name

In step one we talked about choosing our website platform and why you should use WordPress. This next step is all about choosing our hosting and Domain name.

Let’s spend a moment explaining the terms we have just used there:

  • Domain Name – The domain name is the web address that people will use to reach your website. www.yelp.com is a good example of a well known domain name.
  • Web Hosting – Web hosting is the service you use to store all the data of your website. Every website online needs to have Web Hosting.

We’ve partnered with iPage, one of the best WordPress hosting providers available for beginners.

In our opinion, iPage is the best beginner hosting service online today.

The service provides feature-rich WordPress hosting with excellent live support, starting at only $1.99/month.

From the iPage home screen you need to click the Get Started Now Button.

You will find yourself on a screen where you will be asked to choose your domain name.

When creating this tutorial I typed in “ThisIsMyExample.com”. I then pressed search to see if the name is available.

Nice, the domain name is available!

If you find that the domain name you try has already been taken, don’t worry, this is very common.

The internet has been around for a long time and many of the more popular names have already been chosen. However, there are still many variations available.

You can either try a different name or maybe opt for a different extension, (the results page will display a list of alternatives with extensions such as “yourdomainname.net, or .site etc.)

You might even want to try “yourdomainname.directory” as this is a new extension that is available without restrictions.

Anyway, once you have chosen a domain name that is available you can click Next, choose my term.

This will take you to a screen where you can choose a 1, 2 or 3 year term for your hosting plan.

The term you choose is up to you.

In the example above we have opted for a two year plan. (The plan total will be calculated on the right-hand side of the screen).

After choosing your hosting duration press Next, customize my plan.

This next page will display a number of options you can select for your website. They are as follows:

  • Domain Privacy – We recommend you select yes for this. Domain Privacy will help eliminate spam phone calls and texts from design agencies that have looked at the domain sale database and seen you are the new proud owner of a domain name. With Privacy set to yes, you details will not show up on the database.
  • Website Security & Daily Backup – We recommend yes on this. These are the most benginner friendly ways of ensuring your site stays backed up and virus free.
  • All in One WordPress Bundle – This unneccessary, we can show you what plugins you need.
  • SSL Certificate – We recommend having one of these. From July 2018 Google will penalise websites in search that do not have valid security certificates.

After customizing your plan, click Continue to Payment.

(Note, iPage will display more offer pages. Scroll to the bottom of each one and click ‘no thanks’, until you see the purchase confirmation page).

Well done, Step 2 is almost finished!

After the iPage payment confirmation, you will be taken to a screen where you can create your username, login password and other security details.

Once done, you will be able to login to your iPage hosting account by clicking the login button at the top right side of the screen.

Now it is time to begin installing WordPress and a new business directory theme.

Step 3: Installing WordPress & a Business Directory Theme

wordpress logo

i. Installing WordPress Using the iPage SimpleScripts

After logging in to your iPage control panel you will end up at a screen similar to the one below:

Click My Installs (SimpleScripts).

On the next page Click WordPress.

Here you can leave the default settings as they are.

Click Install and iPage will step in to do all the work for you.

During the install you will be asked to create your login details (Username and Password) for the WordPress admin area.

Finally, you will be asked to agree to the WordPress terms and conditions, click complete and…

Woo Hoo!!

Your WordPress Installation is finished.

By heading to the front page of your website (by entering the domain name; example: mydomain.com), you will see a very basic version of your site.

This is to be expected. With little content and only the default WordPress theme installed, your website will be a long way off the business directory you are aiming to launch.

However, this next step will see us take a giant leap towards your goal.

It is now time to purchase and install your business directory theme!

ii. How to install a Business Directory WordPress Theme

build a business directory website

With the WordPress installation up and running, we can now transform your site so that you can take on Yelp 🙂

First we need to login to the WordPress admin panel.

You can do this by adding /wp-admin after your domain name.

Using our mydomain.com as an example; the admin URL would be: mydomain.com/wp-admin

This screen will ask you to enter the username and password, you created during the WordPress installation process.

A screenshot of the WordPress admin dashboard.

After typing in your login details you should end up seeing a screen similar to the image above.

This is the main WordPress admin area of your website. The magic all takes place from here.

As explained in the CMS instructions earlier on, the WordPress admin area will allow you to publish new content, install plugins, change your menus and styling and much, much more.

For now though, we are are going to look at the theme installation page.

Head to the left sidebar menu and hover over Appearance. Cick on Themes.

The WordPress themes selection page

The screenshot above is taken from Buildasitelike.com.

We have have many of the default WordPress themes installed, however only one theme is currently active. (We have chosen what is called a child theme; which allows us to customize the site to our needs).

However, none of what we have installed could help us launch a business directory.

For that we would need to purchase a premium theme.

Where to Buy Premium WordPress Themes online

[Disclosure: Some of the links below are affiliate links, meaning at no additional cost to you, we will earn a small commission if you click through and make a purchase.]

The internet is full of WordPress theme marketplaces. Even a cursory Google search will prove that.

However, because there are so many available the buyer is in a strong position.

You should choose the most reputable marketplaces that offer extensive customer support, as well as a strict quality review process on the themes they are willing to sell.

The best Premium Themes can be found here:

What’s the best Business Directory WordPress Theme?

To create a website like Yelp or Yellow Pages we fully recommend an excellent directory theme called ListingsPro. You can find this at one of the most reputable theme marketplaces online, ThemeForest.

We’ve trialled a number of Yelp style clone themes while researching this guide and ListingsPro is a clear winner.

It is currently the bestselling directory theme for WordPress, and at the time of writing has an average of 4.8 stars out of 5 (with over 400 reviews and more than 6000 sales).

All those satisfied customers cannot be wrong!

Not only does ListingsPro feature one of the best interfaces for users to easily login and create their own business listing, it can take all manner of payment methods, is simple enough for the complete beginner to use, and has all the functionality you need to grow your site over the long term.

With all that said, it is now time to visit ThemeForest so we can purchase our new theme.

Click here to open the ThemeForest website in a new tab.

ListingsPro payment page

The link above will take you to the main ListingsPro sales page.

Click the Buy Now button.

On the checkout page, fill in your First name, last name & email address then click Next.

If you haven’t signed up to ThemeForest website already, you will be asked to create a username and password

Verify the captcha, click the Create account & Continue Button.

This next step will ask for your billing details.

After completing these, click Save and continue.

Available Payment Methods

ThemeForest offers 3 secure payment methods; Debit/Credit card, PayPal and Envato Credit.

Debit/Credit Cards and Paypal will incurr a 2$ surcharge. The convenience of using these options far outweighs the extra cost.

However, if you see yourself using the Marketplace regularly basis, you might want to think about adding credit to your Envato account. You will avoid the surcharge by using this option.

After making payment you will receive a confirmation success message.

Now it is time to download your new theme.

Hover over your username (you will find this in the top right corner of the screen) and click downloads.

The ListingsPro theme will be there, ready for you to download (similar to the screenshot below).

Themeforest Downloads Page

Click the green download button.

This will reveal two options:

  • All files and Documentation – This download contains the theme, licence information and other related documentation, all in one zip file.
  • Installable WordPress files only – This is just the theme files only, in one single .zip file.

We will be selecting option number 2; the installable WordPress files only.

Click and download the zip file to your desktop.

Once that’s done, head to your main WordPress dashboard again (mywebsite.com/wp-admin).

We will now be returning to the WordPress theme selection page so that we can upload and install ListingsPro. (Hover over Appearance and then click on Themes.)

Installing ListingsPro into WordPress

This is where your website really starts to come alive. Very soon we will have a fully functional site like Yelp.

To make life easy for the beginner, the authors of ListingsPro have created a video showing you exactly how to install your theme, and all the demo content to get started.

With your downloaded theme file ready on your desktop, follow the video above to quickly and easily, launch your new business directory.

An overview of the final steps

To make sure we take you to the very end of the process, here’s a quick overview on what the installation video will cover.

  • How to install the ListingsPro theme.
  • How to one-click install all the plugins that came packaged with your new theme
  • How to upload all the demo content to get started

Remember, the beauty of installing the demo content means your website will be in a complete state for you to begin marketing and adding your own customer listings.

With the demo framework in place, you can add and delete content as you see fit, until you have a finished product that is uniquely yours.

Move aside Yelp, there’s a newcomer in town.

Congratulations you’ve just built your very own Business Directory!

  • How to Install WordPress on to your hosting plan
  • How to Install a Classifieds Theme on to your website
  • How to Upload demo content to get you started

Step 2: Hosting & Domain Name

Now that we’ve chosen WordPress as our website platform to use for our classifieds website, we can now move on to purchasing our hosting and Domain name.

To explanain the terms we have just used there:

  • Domain Name – The domain name is the web address that is typed for people to reach your website. www.craigslist.com is a good example.
  • Hosting – The hosting service is the company that you use to store all your website data online. Every website needs to have Hosting.

Click this link to open the iPage Website in a new window

First you need to click the Get Started Now Button.

This will take you to a screen where you can choose your free domain name.

For this tutorial I have chosen ThisIsMyExample.com. After pressing search I can see that…

Excellent, the domain name is available.

Remember, do not be disheartened if you try a domain name only to find it has been taken. Popular names will often be unavailable.

However, the results page will display a list of alternatives you can choose from.

If the .com version of the name you want is already being used, you may have a choice of a .net version; (or one of the many other domain name extensions that now exist).

Once you have settled on your domain name and seen that it is free, press Next, choose my term.

You will now see a screen that gives you the option of choosing a 1, 2 or 3 year term for your hosting plan.

The choice you make here is entirely up to you.

In the example above we have chosen a two year plan. (You will see the plan total calculated on the right-hand side of the screen).

After choosing your hosting duration press Next, customize my plan.

This will take you to a page where you can select various options. These are as follows:

  • Domain Privacy – Select yes for this. Domain Privacy will stop any spam phone calls and texts from design agencies that have used the registry to see you have just bought a domain name.
  • Website Security & Daily Backup – We recommend yes on this. It is the easiest way to ensure your website remains secure and that daily backups are made.
  • All in One WordPress Bundle – This unneccessary, you will have all the plugins you need by the end of this tutorial.
  • SSL Certificate – You should have this. From July 2018 Google will penalise websites in search that do not have valid security certificates.

Well done, Step 2 is almost finished!

After seeing the iPage payment confirmation message, you will be asked to create a username, your login password and security question.

After completing this you will be able to login to your iPage hosting account (login button on the top right of the screen) so that we can begin installing WordPress and your new classifieds theme.

Step 3: Installing WordPress & a Classifieds Theme

wordpress

i. Installing WordPress Using iPage SimpleScripts

After logging in to your iPage control panel you will see a screen similar to this:

Click My Installs (SimpleScripts).

This will lead you to the screen below. Click WordPress from the list of options.

On the next screen you can leave the default settings as they are.

Click Install and iPage will begin installing WordPress for you. When prompted you will need to create some login details (Username and Password) for you WordPress admin area.

Finally, there will be one more screen asking you to agree to the terms and conditions, click complete and…

Well Done!

Your WordPress Installation is now ready.

If you now visit the front page of your website by entering your domain name, (example: mydomain.com), you will see a very basic version of your site.

Without any content and just the WordPress default theme installed, your website will look nothing like the Classifieds business you are aiming for.

But don’t panic; in this next step we will be taking things to a whole new level. We are now going to purchase and install your classifieds theme!

ii. Installing a Classifieds Website WordPress Theme

classiads theme wordpress

So now that you’ve got your WordPress installation up and running, it’s time to transform your site so that you can take on Craigslist 🙂

The first step is to login to the WordPress admin panel.

You can access this by adding /wp-admin after your domain name.

To go back to our mydomain.com example; the admin URL would be: mydomain.com/wp-admin

This will take you to a login page where you will need to enter the username and password, you created during the WordPress installation process.

A screenshot of the WordPress admin dashboard.

With any luck you should now be seeing a screen like the image above.

This is the main WordPress admin area of your website. It is also where all the magic takes place.

From adding new content, installing plugins, changing your menus and styling; it can all be controlled from here.

However, for now we are just going to take a look at where you can manage the look of your site by installing a theme.

Head to the left sidebar menu and hover over Appearance. Cick on Themes and this will take you to the theme selection page.

The WordPress themes selection page

The screenshot above is taken from the Buildasitelike.com theme selection page.

As you can see, we currently have the default WordPress themes installed, but only have one theme Active. (This is a child theme, because we have heavily customized this website to our needs).

However, none of these themes would cut the mustard for launching a classifieds website.

For that we will need to purchase a premium theme.

The Best Place to Buy Premium WordPress Themes

[Disclosure: Some of the links below are affiliate links, meaning at no additional cost to you, we will earn a small commission if you click through and make a purchase.]

There are no shortage of WordPress theme marketplaces online. The quickest Google search will show you that.

However, with the abundance of choice it does make sense to be careful when buying a theme. Only head to a reputable marketplace that offers plenty of support, as well as a strict quality review process for the themes that they sell.

In our opinion, the best Premium Themes can be found at the following places:

What’s the best Classifieds WordPress Theme?

Classiads is one of the best selling Classifieds WordPress theme ever.

Furthermore, the theme is consistently kept up to date by it’s author, and is really nice to look at too.

So now let’s head over to ThemeForest so we can purchase our new theme.

Click here to open the ThemeForest website in a new tab.

The link above will take you to the main Classiads sales page.

Click the Buy Now button.

On the checkout page, fill in your First name, last name & email address then click Next.

This screen will ask you to create a ThemeForest username and password

Verify the captcha, click the Create account & Continue Button.

You will now be asked to fill in your billing details.

After completing that step, click Save and continue.

Available Payment Methods

ThemeForest and the Envato Marketplace offer 3 secure payment methods; Debit/Credit card, PayPal and Envato Credit.

Debit/Credit Cards and Paypal will incurr a 2$ surcharge. we would argue that the convenience is worth the extra dollars.

However, if you feel you will be using the Marketplace on a regular basis, it maybe worth your while adding credit to your Envato account. This way you will not incurr the extra 2 dollars on your transactions.

After making payment with your preferred method, you will receive a confirmation success message.

Now it is time to download your new theme.

Hover over your username in the top right corner of the screen and then click downloads.

The Classiads theme will now be ready for access (similar to the screenshot below).

Themeforest Downloads Page

Once you have reached the downloads screen, Click the green download button.

This will reveal two options:

  • All files and Documentation – This download contains the theme, licence information and other related documentation, all in one zip file.
  • Installable WordPress files only – This is just the theme files only, in one single .zip file.

Option number two is the one we need; the installable WordPress files only.

Click this and download the file to your desktop.

Once that’s done, head to your main WordPress dashboard again (mywebsite.com/wp-admin), and return to the theme selection page that we visited earlier: hover over Appearance and then click on Themes.

Installing the theme in WordPress

This is where your project gets very exciting; we are now going to see your Classifieds website come alive.

This is the final stages of building a site like Craigslist.

To make life easy for the beginner, the authors of Classiads have created an easy to follow video covering every aspect of the theme installation process.

Not only that, they also have all the demo content you need so that your site looks exactly like the one we showed you earlier.

With your downloaded theme ready and waiting, follow the video above to quickly and easily, launch your new website.

An overview of the final steps

The installation video will cover the following:

Step 1: Which Website Platform to Use (The CMS)

laptop

One of the fastest ways to start a social network in 2018 is to use a well established, existing website platform. This is what we call the “Content Management System” (or CMS).

Why use a Content Management System (CMS)?

We have explained this in every guide on Buildasitelike.com. The reasons remain the same no matter what type of website you decide to build.

In simple terms, using a CMS will help you create your site without knowing any code. Which as a beginner is exactly what you need. Knowledge of technical languages such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript no longer become an obstacle in the way of you creating your new online enterprise.

A good CMS along with a well designed theme is all that is required to create a sophisticated website with tons of functionality.

Furthermore, one of the best and most popular CMS’ (WordPress), is absolutely free.

Before we take a closer look at the website revolution that is WordPress, let’s take a brief look at what a CMS actually does.

So what exactly does a Content Management System (CMS) do?

wordpress cms

A content management system is the foundation of your website. Everything else is built on top.

Once you have your chosen CMS installed, you will be able to create and manage the design, content and overall function of your site all within a simple to use interface.

You can actually compare it to logging into your Facebook profile. There you can upload images, write posts and comments and leave links to your favourite content online.

A CMS will allow you to do exactly the same thing with your own website. It allows you to manage images, text and all other website content and function.

Furthermore, you can use the CMS to control how your website looks to the outside world. It’s just a case of installing the right ‘theme’.

In the case of our Social Network site, we will install our CMS and choose a theme that allows users to create their own profiles and begin sharing content via your website. (And remember, we can do all this without you needing to know a single line of code).

That is the beauty of a good CMS. It allows a complete beginner to launch their own website with ease.

A Closer look at the WordPress CMS (What does it have to offer?)

WordPress is by far the most popular CMS on the planet. Here’s a few reasons why:

  • It is completely FREE
  • It is designed for beginners to pick up and run with (yet experienced users love it too)
  • There are so many themes available it is ridiculous (we are talking hundreds of thousands). Whether free or premium, they can be installed with a click of a button.
  • WordPress plugins allow you to increase the functionality of your website in line with your demands.
  • It is easy to customize
  • WordPress and most themes are responsive in design. This means your site will look good on all screen sizes.
  • WordPress is fast and secure and is constantly being updated

For this tutorial we will be showing you how to create a website like Facebook using WordPress.

To do that, the guide will now cover the following:

  • How to get started with the best Web Hosting for WordPress
  • How to register a Domain Name
  • How to Install WordPress onto your hosting
  • How to Install a Crowdfunding Theme into WordPress
  • How to get your website up and running

Step 2: Hosting & Domain Name

So we’ve chosen WordPress as our website platform. In a little while we will be showing you how to install the CMS.

First howeverm, we need to purchase a hosting service and buy a Domain name.

Here’s a simple explanation of why this is neccessary.

  • Domain Name – Every website needs a web address so people can find your site on the internet. This address is called a domain name; (Facebook.com is an example of a domain name.)
  • Hosting – This is the service that hosts your website data. This is what allows your site to be online, ready for users to visit. Every website that exists needs to have Hosting of some kind.

This will lead you to a page where you can choose your free domain name.

For this tutorial I have typed in ThisisMyExample.com and then pressed search to see if it is available.

Nice, your domain is available!

Now that’s the message you want to see.

However, don’t be concerned if your first attempts trying a name shows up as unavailable. Popular .com names are often already taken.

You can always try different variations, and remember, iPage will also provide suggestions in the results page. There could always be a .net version (and hundred different other extensions) of the domain name ready for you to opt for.

So, once you have settled on a name that is available it is time to press Next, choose my term.

The choose you term page (shown above) will asks you to select a 1, 2 or 3 year duration for your hosting plan.

The length you choose really is up to you. Your budget or how long you wish to own the website for could well be determining factors. However, with iPage, the longer term you choose the more savings you will have in the long run.

We have chosen the middle ground with a two year plan. On the right-hand side of the screen, the total cost of the term will be calculated.

After you have made your choice click Next, customize my plan.

This will take you to a list of optional extras.

The optional addons are as follows:

  • Domain Privacy – We definitely recommend this. It will stop you from receiving spammy emails and automated calls from unscrupulous web design agencies trying to sell you their services because they have seen on the register you are new domain owner.
  • Website Security & Daily Backup – We actually recommend selecting yes on these. It is the best way for a beginner to ensure their site remains virus free and fully backed up. (These tasks can be managed with WordPress Plugins however).
  • All in One WordPress Bundle – Unneccessary in our opinion.
  • SSL Certificate – You should buy this. From July 2018 Google will not take kindly to websites that do not have valid security certificates.

After you have chosen all the extras that you want for your new website, click Continue to Payment and fill in your payment details.

(Note, before you reach the payment page you iPage will present a couple of pages of added extras you can purchase. Don’t bother with these. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click ‘no thanks’, until you reach the purchase confirmation screen ).

Well done, Step 2 is almost finished!

After payment you will see a purchase confirmation.

After this you will be asked to choose a username, a login password and a security question and answer for your iPage account.

Once you have completed this, it is time to login to your new iPage hosting account so that we can install your WordPress CMS.

Step 3: Installing WordPress & a Social Network Theme

wordpress install

i. Installing WordPress Using the iPage SimpleScripts

After logging into the iPage Control Panel you will see a screen very similar to the screenshot below.

Head to the Website section, and click My Installs (SimpleScripts).

From the script list, click WordPress.

This will take you to another screen where the default settings are the ones that you need.

Click Install and iPage will do the rest.

(During the install process you will be asked to agree to create some login details (Username and Password) for your WordPress admin area… type these in (keep a record of them somewhere safe) and then…

Success!

Your WordPress Installation is done.

We are progressing very well here.

Now, the front page of your website will be your domain name, (mydomain.com as an example).

With WordPress installed, your website will have the default WordPress theme in place. Things will look a bit bland at this stage. That’s to be expected.

And no need to worry, the next section will take things to a whole new level…

We’re about to purchase and install your social network theme to bring your new website alive!

ii. Installing a Social Network Theme

buddy boss theme

We are now at the exciting stage.

It is time to purchase and upload your social networking theme so you can lauch your own site like Facebook. Move aside Mark Zuckerberg 🙂

Before we purchase the new theme we will login into the WordPress admin panel.

The WordPress admin area is where you manage your website.

It is also where you will be installing your social network theme. Before we look into the one you should buy, we’ll take a little look at the where your current theme is installed.

Head to the left sidebar menu; hover over Appearance, and then click Themes.

The WordPress themes selection page

The above image is the theme selection page for Buildasitelike.com.

Our selected theme is a Child Theme. On your theme selection page you will see all the default WordPress themes, (Twenty Eighteen, Seventeen etc).

You can choose a new theme at any stage just by clicking activate inside the theme details box. You will also see the ‘Add Theme‘ option at the top of the page. We will be using this a little later.

First we need to head to one of the many WordPress repositories to purchase your Facebook style social network theme.

After clicking the Buy Now button you will see the screen below.

Click Proceed to checkout and fill in your payment details (all major credit and debit cards are supported, as well as Paypal).

You will also need to create your login details.

Once that is done click Continue Payment and wait for your Purchase Confirmation Message.

Then, login into your BuddyBoss profile by clicking the Sign-In button in the top right corner of the page and entering your details.

Locate the Downloads tab within your BuddyBoss dashboard and click the link to download the Boss 2.0 theme file to your desktop.

Once that’s done, head to your main WordPress dashboard again (mywebsite.com/wp-admin), and return to the theme page, (hover over Appearance and then click on Themes).

wordpress cms

One of the fastest ways to build a video sharing website in 2018 is to use an already established platform, also known as a “Content Management System (CMS)”.

Why use a Content Management System (CMS)?

There’s many good reasons to opt for a Content Management System as the backbone of your website; the main ones being, speed, efficiency and security.

For many years building a website involved at least some knowledge of code. If you didn’t know any HTML, CSS, and JavaScript your options were very limited.

Fast forward to 2018 and now anyone can make a sophisticated website by simply using a content management systems (CMS). Spending years learning how to write code is a thing of the past.

Furthermore, the world’s most popular CMS, a system called WordPress, is absolutely free.

Before we get on to that however, let’s take a look at what a CMS actually does.

What does a Content Management System (CMS) do exactly?

A close up of the ‘Add New Post’ admin area in WordPress

A content management system allows you to create and manage all of the content that goes on to your website, from an easy to use, dashboard.

Much like you login to your Facebook account to post pictures and updates, you can use a CMS to login to your website to add pages, posts and images. You can also impact the whole look of your site by choosing one of the many ‘Themes’ that are readily available.

In the case of a video sharing website, you can use the CMS to manage videos, user submissions, categories, payment methods and much, much more.

The whole system is very intuitive and once you get started is easy to understand even for absolute beginners.

So, why is WordPress the best platform to build a video sharing website in 2018?

wordpress logo

WordPress is the best CMS for your video streaming site. Here’s some reasons why:

  • It is free and easy to use.
  • There are literally thousands of designs you can add to WordPress to create the look of your site (more on that below).
  • It is very easy to customize and extend.
  • There are thousands of WordPress plugins available which allow you to increase the functionality of your website as you progress.
  • Your site will be responsive (i.e will adapt its look to suit the screen size it is being viewed on)
  • WordPress provides superior website performance and security

For this tutorial, we will be showing you exactly how to create a website like Youtube using WordPress

These are the details we are going to cover:

  • How to choose the best Web Hosting for WordPress
  • How to register a Domain Name
  • How to Install WordPress onto your hosting
  • How to Install a Video sharing Theme into WordPress
  • How to Upload the first bits of content to get started

Step 2: Hosting & Domain Name

Now that we’ve chosen WordPress as our website platform to use for our video sharing site, the next step is to purchase hosting and to buy a Domain name.

Here’s a simple explanation of the terms we have just used there:

  • Domain Name – This is the web address that people type to get to your website, Take Facebook.com for example.
  • Hosting – This is the service that you use to store all the content of your website online. Every website needs to have Hosting.

We aim to continuing improving the site, adding more valuable guides and helping beginners get started online.

iPage provides Feature-rich WordPress hosting with excellent live support, starting at just $1.99/month. On top of the free first year domain registration they also throw in over $500 worth of extras on sign up. It really is one of the best hosting deals on the market today.

So let’s go ahead and purchase our iPage Hosting plan and register our FREE Domain Name.

Click this link to open the iPage Website in a new window

The first thing you will need to do is click the Get Started Now Button.

The next screen you see will give you the option of choosing your free domain name.

As an example I have chosen MyVideoShares.com and then pressed search to see if it is available.

Excellent, the results page in the screenshot above shows me that the domain is available. (Remember, you can try anything you want as your domain name, however popular terms will often be taken.)

Note, alternative domains will be suggested in the results. If the .com version is already taken, you can always opt for a .net version or something similar instead.

Once you are happy with the name you have chosen and seen that it is available, it is time to press Next, choose my term.

This will take you to a screen that gives you the option of choosing a 1, 2 or 3 year term for your hosting plan.

The choice you make here is entirely up to you, your budget and how long you plan on running the website for.

In the example above we have chosen a two year plan. The amount is calculated within the box on the right side of the screen.

Once you are happy with the hosting duration you can press Next, customize my plan.

This will take you to a page where you can select or deselect various options for your plan.

The options you can add are as follows:

  • Domain Privacy – We recommend you select yes as this will stop you from being hounded by phone calls and texts from various design agencies that have managed to get your details from the register.
  • Website Security & Daily Backup – It is a good idea to select these to make sure your website remains secure and that daily backups are made. However, if you are on a budget, both of these tasks can also be done using WordPress Plugins.
  • All in One WordPress Bundle – This unneccessary, we are going to show you everything you need in this very tutorial.
  • SSL Certificate – We recommend you buy this. From July 2018 Google will penalise websites in search that do not have valid security certificates. To have one is important.

After you have customized your plan, you click Continue to Payment to make the final purchase with card or paypal account.

(Note, you may have to skip through a couple of pages of extra offers. Starting out you will not need these, so scroll to the bottom of the page and click ‘no thanks’, until you reach your purchase confirmation page).

Well done, step 2 is nearly complete!

After receiving a success message that the hosting has been successfully purchased, a screen will appear asking you to create a username, your login password and security question.

After completing this it will be time to log into your iPage hosting account to begin installing WordPress and your video sharing website theme.

Step 3: Installing WordPress & a Video Sharing Theme

i. Installing WordPress Using iPage SimpleScripts

After logging in to your iPage control panel you will see a screen similar to this:

The My Installs (SimpleScripts) is where you need to head to first.

Click My Installs, and the screen below will appear. Locate WordPress from the list and click.

This will take you to another screen where you simply need to leave all the settings as they are.

Click Install and iPage will do the rest for you.

They’ll be one more screen asking you to agree to the terms and conditions, click complete and…

Success!

Your WordPress Installation is now ready, you can visit the front page of your website by going to your domain name, Example: mydomain.com.

The default WordPress theme will be installed at the moment, and without any content things will look a bit bland.

Don’t worry, in the next step we’re going to shake things up and show you how to add your theme. This is where your new Youtube video sharing site will start to come alive.

ii. Installing a Video Sharing Theme

kickcube theme on laptop

So now that you’ve got your WordPress installation up and running, it’s time to change the default theme to a video sharing Theme, so that your website can take on Youtube. 🙂

First you will need to login to the WordPress admin panel.

This can easily be accessed by adding /wp-admin after your domain name. So if your site domain is mywebsite.com the admin URL becomes: mywebsite.com/wp-admin

When you visit this URL without being logged in you will be asked to enter your username and password, (this is the login for WordPress that you will have selected during the install process).

A screenshot of the WordPress admin dashboard.

After successful login you will be taken to the WordPress Dashboard. This is the main admin area of your website and gives you access to all the menu options you need to get cracking.

The first step for us will be getting the new theme up and running.

To orientate yourself, head to the left sidebar menu and hover over Appearance. Then click on Themes. This will take you to the main theme selection page.

The WordPress themes selection page

From the image above you can see Buildasitelike.com currently has a few of the default WordPress themes installed, as well as a blogging theme called Sparkling.

However, since this tutorial is all about creating a website like Youtube, we need to find the best video sharing theme for the job.

For this we are going to need a premium theme.

The Best Place to Buy Premium WordPress Themes

[Disclosure: Some of the links below are affiliate links, meaning at no additional cost to you, we will earn a small commission if you click through and make a purchase.]

There are countless Premium WordPress marketplaces online.

However, the quality does vary. When looking to buy a premium wordpress theme, you should choose a Marketplace that has strict content quality review processes, adequate after sales support and a wide range of themes to choose from. This last point is especially important if you have to pay a yearly subscription to access a provider’s themes.

In our opinion, the best Premium Themes marketplaces can be narrowed down to the following list:

What’s the best Video Sharing (Youtube) WordPress Theme?

For the purpose of this tutorial, we will be using a theme called KickCube which can be bought from the ThemeForest marketplace.

We’ve test driven a number of Video Sharing Themes available and KickCube came out on top for a number of reasons; not only does it allow your users to login and easily publish their own video links, the theme is consistently kept up to date by it’s author, is superbly designed and offers great speed and functionality.

First we need to go ahead and purchase our theme. This can be easily done from the ThemeForest website.

Click here to open the ThemeForest website in a new tab.

KickCube purchase screen
KICKCUBE – Membership & User Content Sharing Theme

You should now be on the main KickCube sales page.

Click the Buy Now button and you will be redirected to the checkout page.

Fill in your First name, last name & email address then click Next.

You will be asked to choose your ThemeForest username and password, (it might be a good idea to keep all of these login details you now have in a safe place)

Verify the captcha, click the Create account & Continue Button.

After filling in your billing details, click the Save and continue button.

Available Payment Methods

ThemeForest and the Envato Marketplace offer secure payment options via 3 main methods.

The first two methods are Debit/Credit card and PayPal. Each of these has a 2$ surcharge, however the convenience is more than worth it.

The 3rd option is the Envato Credit. You do avoid the surcharge with this, but you will need add credit to your Envato account.

Whichever method you choose, after recieving the payment success message, you should hover over your username in the top right corner of the screen and click on downloads.

Here you will find the KickCube theme in your downloads area (much like the screenshot below).

At this stage, we are only interested in option number two; the installable WordPress files only.

Click this and download the file to your desktop.

Once that’s done, head to your main WordPress dashboard again (mywebsite.com/wp-admin), and return to the theme page, (hover over Appearance and then click on Themes).

Installing the theme in WordPress

This is where it all get’s very exciting. We are now in the final stages of setting up our video sharing website like Youtube.

And to make it even easier, the KickCube theme author’s have created a simple install method, as well as a video explaining how to do it.

With your downloaded theme at the ready, you only need follow the video above to quickly and easily, install the theme.

Here’s a quick overview of what you will be doing:

  • Installing the theme with a one-click install process
  • The video will then show you how to quickly install all the neccessary plugins to make the theme work
  • You will then upload all the demo content that came with the theme, so that you have a finished result exactly the same as our demo site at the start of this guide
  • You will finish with a few final tweaks to customize your site.

After that you’re finished.

Congratulations you’ve just built your very own video sharing website!
